View Full Version : Songs about (other) bands

What are your favorite songs about other bands/artists?

To start off, I'll name a few:

-"Hi, We're the Replacements" (by They Might Be Giants, about the Replacements)
-"Something To Du" (by the Replacements, about Husker Du)
-"Not If You Were the Last Dandy on Earth" (by The Brian Jonestown Massacre, about the Dandy Warhols)
-"I Wish I Was Him" (by Ben Lee, about Evan Dando, though I actually prefer Kathleen Hannah's cover of this song to the original)

For the sake of difficulty I'm going to disallow songs that just namecheck other bands such as the Clash's "1977" which namechecks (no) "Elvis, Beatles or the Rolling Stones."

Bonus points if you can get an actual series going, like the They Might Be Giants -> Replacements -> Hukser Du, or if you can get two bands that each have songs about eachother.

Good point--let's limit this to rock bands for now.

No, feel free to discuss whatever songs and bands you want, but keep in mind I will indeed look down on your inferior musical tastes.

Sweet Home Alabama

Well I heard mister young sing about her
Well, I heard ole neil put her down
Well, I hope neil young will remember
A southern man don’t need him around anyhow

Is "Sweet Home Alabama" a song about Neil Young, or is it a song about Alabama with a namecheck of Neil Young?

The Dead Milkmen - In Praise of Sha Na Na.
is that semi-obscure enough.
[ QUOTE ]
Sha Na Na were the kings of Woodstock
You know it's true deep in your heart
Greasy guys in gold lamae
If only Hendrix had been so smart
Pete Townshend wouldn't be so deaf
If he had followed Sha Na Na's advice
and played some fifties do-wop songs
That even your mom would think are nice

Keith and Janis went away
But Sha Na Na are here to stay
I don't care about Joan Baez
But Sha Na Na can wear my fez

Sha Na Na were the kings of the sixties
Deep in your heart you know it's true
All those lids are Berkley dressed like Bowser
They didn't like the Stones or the Who
Sha Na Na didn't need no flower power
They didn't drive a yellow submarine
But they were the ones who called the shots
Yeah, Sha Na na really made the scene

Sha Na Na..killed Kennedy
Sha Na Na..stabbed that guy at Altamont
Sha Na Na..started the Peace Corps
Sha Na Na..were the first astronauts
Sha Na Na..grew organic food
Sha Na Na..led student sit-ins
Sha Na Na..joined the Black Panthers
Sha Na Na..never seemed to fit in

You can move to Montana and listen to Santana
But you still won't be as cool as Sha Na Na

Brand New - Seventy Times 7 (about hating Taking Back Sunday)
Taking Back Sunday - There's No 'I' in Team (a comeback)

Seventy Times 7 was written about a falling out between best friends. Lead singer Jesse Lacey (BN) had been best friends with then Taking Back Sunday guitarist/singer John Nolan (who has left the band) since grade school. While they were in high school Nolan slept with Lacey's girlfriend. Lacey then wrote "Seventy Times Seven" (track 9 of their debut album), a bitter track directed towards Nolan in response to his sleeping with Lacey's girlfriend. the song contained the lyrics "Is that what you call tact? You're as subtle as a brick in the small of my back". Nolan, in response to hearing that "Seventy Times Seven" was indeed written as a stab at him, wrote "There's No 'I' in Team" for Lacey. this song also contained the lyrics "Is that what you call tact? You're as subtle as a brick in the small of my back". the lyrics weren't "stolen", they were used in two songs which were directed towards each other.

Everclear "Otis Redding":

Do you remember when we were strung out?
Eatin' top ramen, macaroni and cheese
We would get so lost in that basement room
Let the Otis Redding sing us to sleep
I wish I had one more life

I don't wanna be wasted
I don't wanna live inside this daydream anymore
I just wanna be happy again
I don't wanna be wasted, I dont wanna be blind

I wish I could be like all my heroes
I wish I could be like all yours too
I wish I could sing like Otis Redding
I wish I could play this guitar in tune

And the Drive-By Truckers wrote a great tune "Ronnie (Van Zant) and Neil":

-And out in California, a rock star from Canada writes a couple of great songs about the bad [censored] that went down
-"Southern Man" and "Alabama" certainly told some truth
-But there were a lot of good folks down here and Neil Young wasn't around

-Now Ronnie and Neil became good friends their feud was just in song
-Skynyrd was a bunch of Neil Young fans and Neil he loved that song
-So He wrote "Powderfinger" for Skynyrd to record
-But Ronnie ended up singing "Sweet Home Alabama" to the lord

The band is Weezer.
They are not rubbish.
The song is not about Buddy Holly per se and hence BELONGS IN THE OTHER THREAD.

Possibly the worst tribute song ever by an important artist about another (perhaps worst tribute song period):

Roger Daltrey's "Under a Raging Moon" about Keith Moon.

Nerf Herder - Van Halen

I bought Van Halen I
It was the best damn record I ever owned
TG&Y 1978
Two hand tapping guitar technique really got me off
Eruption yeah, ain't talkin' 'bout love, I'm on fire

Tomorrow may come
Tomorrow may never come again
Can't you hear Jamie cryin?
She's runnin' with the devil

I bought Women and Children First
Fair Warning and Van Halen II
Dance the night away
1984 my favorite record yeah I wore it down
Might as well jump [x2]

Tomorrow may come
Tomorrow may never come again
Can't you hear Jamie cryin?
She's runnin' with the devil

Is this what you wanted, Sammy Hagar?
Sammy Hagar, is this what you wanted, man?
Dave lost his hairline but you lost your cool buddy
Can't drive 55
I'll never buy your lousy records again
Again, again, again, never again:

Tomorrow may come
Tomorrow may never come again
Can't you hear Jamie cryin?
She's runnin' with the devil
Jump jump jump jump jump jump jump, might as well jump [x2]

Pete Townsend's "Rough Boys" -- Sex Pistols.

[/ QUOTE ]

I think he admitted later that this song was about his sexual preferences.

Tough boys, running the streets, come a little closer
Rough toys, under the sheets, nobody knows her
Rough boys, don't walk away, I very nearly missed you
Tough boys, come over here, I wanna bite and kiss you

"Sweet home alabama" was a direct reply to "Alabama" by Neil Young

or it could be the other way around on Neil's songs

Young responded to "Sweet Home Alabama" with "Southern Man"

Have there not been any Blur/Oasis songs? Didn't they have a little thing going? Also, Starf*ckers Inc. didn't directly name names, but it's about a few different people Marilyn Manson had fallings out with (Reznor, Corgan), no?

Yeah, I think he did say that at some point (although it is hard to necessarily believe anything he says at this point, e.g., "I was just researching pedophilia on my computer"), but I assumed the song thus had a double meaning and at least partly related to the Pistols. But I could be wrong.

Is "Sweet Home Alabama" a song about Neil Young, or is it a song about Alabama with a namecheck of Neil Young?

[/ QUOTE ]

It's neither. Much in the same vain that Norman Lear created Archie Bunker to mock that type of person, Ronnie Van Zandt was mocking certain southern mindframes. And much like in the Archie Bunker example, where people missed the mocking and embraced the character, people from Alabama embraced the song. At least that's how I heard it explained.
