View Full Version : Using poker terminology daily

Autocratic

I've decided to start an experiment where I use poker terms instead of responding to people as I usually would. For example, when someone says "Hey Autocratic, would you like this 20 dollar bill I found?" I'll be like "I call." But when they're like "Hey Auto, swallow this" while giving me a bottle of something gross looking, I'll say "I fold." And when they're like "Yo Auto you reek, here's some deoderant" I'll say "I raise" while walking into the shower.

If I can apply poker to real life, I figure my game will become entirely second nature, and I can do other things while playing while the money pours in. Agreed?

Just be careful when picking up the soap that some dude doesn't go over the top and come all in.

I use "the nuts" and variants a lot. Examples:

"Pink Floyd is the nuts."
"Gran Turismo is the nut racing simulation."

However, I think that anything beyond that is pretty crazy. If you're out on a date and she asks you up to her apartment for coffee, saying "I call" hoping to hit your draw to "the nuts" on "the river" (i.e. her couch) is super weak.

Saying things like "Pink Floyd is the nuts" or "Gran Turismo is the nut racing simulation" outside of 2+2 or a similar venue is already super weak to begin with.

Meh, to each his own. I live with a few poker players, so it's a good way for me to express approval.

I think the Rocket Scientist hit the nail right on the head. There's more than enough poor poker lingo at poker rooms across the country.

Everytime I see some little lady refer to her aces as poket rockets I cringe.

Let's not contribute to this silliness by helping spread poker lingo to mainstream society.

Cheers,

Swede

the only one i use is "i call your bluff"

my roommate and i have actually turned this into a continuous bet as well. here's how it works.

say i'm sitting on the couch watching tv and he's like
"let's get shitfaced and go to the bar"

i can say "i call your bluff" and if he in fact was just bluffing and doesn't want to go then he owes me $5. but if he wasn't bluffing, or even if he was, but decides to go i owe him $5.

people make ridiculous claims all the time. here's a classic. he's studying for a test and he says "i'm screwed, i'm going to fail this test" so i call his bluff and either he fails it or he owes me $5.

you gotta watch what you say because you don't want to be caught bluffing.

I use wrestling terminology more. "No sell" is a great line.

my wife is getting really tired of references to "going all in" in the bedroom. She also hates my sup bro imitation.

Maybe she hates your imitation because she doesn't know it when you go all in, unlike when sup bro goes all in /images/graemlins/grin.gif
