View Full Version : What is the story behind Q5 spades?

I see the hand Q/images/graemlins/spade.gif 5/images/graemlins/spade.gif, repeatedly refered to "Granny Mae," posted throughout several forums, and usually (and improperly) raised, reraised, and even capped regardless of what the board or preflop action is.

My simple question is why?

Thanks

Yeah I read the FAQ. There is not much there about it. The most it says is "There are many theories as to why this is so."

Ahh, I thought the whole story was there...

If I recall correctly, when Granny had a looong vacation the other year or two, Lorinda got to remember a specific hand that Granny used to play with success (in tourneys I believe?), and in honor of the hand, Granny got her name. Or the other way around, of course.

I think Inthacup was the first to post hand histories (from 15/30) with massive success of the GM hand. Later people catched on with a rave for a long time, and today we see them now and then.

Check out ChristinaB's starting hand thread here. (http://archiveserver.twoplustwo.com/showthreaded.php?Cat=&Board=&Number=802436&page=&v iew=&sb=5&o=&fpart=)

It gives names for almost every possible hand and a brief explanation on the origin for many. Her rationale for Grannymae is:

Q-5 - GrannyMae (if both spades, an old-time player, Granny=Queen, Mae=5th Month, some say Q5 spades was her favorite

You might find more elsewhere but that is a start at least.

More than that, don't question it and just play it preflop like Aces and the nuts postflop and you'll be fine /images/graemlins/smile.gif
