I'm currently a sophomore in college, and I plan on moving out near vegas when I graduate to live for a while, get a job, and play a ton of poker.

I have been browsing various real estate websites, and it seems like Henderson is a cheap, nice place to live.

So, if there is anyone out there who lives (or has lived) in Henderson, I would like to know what you think of the area. How safe is it? How easy is it to get to the strip? Is there anything to do in Henderson, or do you have to go to Vegas for entertainment? Are there a lot of people in their 20's living there?

Also, I know this depends on a ton of factors, but what is the cost of living out there? I'm just looking for a ballpark figure. Figure a one bedroom apartment at ~750 per month.

Would it be cheaper/better to live somewhere outside of LA and play in California?

I'm young and naive, so any comments or help is appreciated.

Oh, two more things. If this is the wrong forum, I appologize. I figured this was my best bet. And I know that online can be more profitable than B&M, but I hate online poker.

Apartment Guide (http://www.apartmentguide.com) will help you with apartments and pricing. Henderson is a nice town, not too far from the strip. Several years ago, Vegas and Henderson used to be separated by several miles of dirt, now they run right into each other. There are some VERY expensive communities down there, but there are also some not too expensive ones. Housing is ridiculous in price in the entire valley.

it would probably be cheaper to find a place in vegas. henderson is just the suburbs of vegas so would probably be a pretty expensive place to live.

Those are apartments that got turned into "condos" just so they could make a quick buck. Thats why I'm moving out of the ones that I'm in. They construction is not the greatest and they aren't really going to do anything to them remodeling wise.

So why don't you move to LA and play at commerce or bike where they've got about 1/2 the tables in all of vegas in one room.

I asked if this would be a good idea. I have no evidence to back this up, but I thought that Cali was a much more expensive place to live than Nevada. Is this true?

las vegas is one of the most expensive cities in this country. you should move to southern california to somewhere like van nuys where it is cheap to live, but is near the poker rooms. las vegas is one of the greatest cities in the world, but it's going to cost you a lot of money to live there. personally, i would try and find somewhere to live in california.

Cali is absoultely MORE expensive than anywhere in Neveda.. Not only taxes but rent and car insurance.. Everything

I'm a recent grad too considering the same exact thing
move to vegas, poker & a job

- I was wondering what type of job are you, as a college grad willing to settle with in vegas? Personally, I find it kind of depressing to go there and work front desk at a hotel or start training to be a dealer which would firstly make absoultely nothing.... I would love to work the pit or find a job you need the college education for.
As someone in the same situation, whats your thoughts?

This is another thing that I am mulling over. On one hand, I feel that it is a waste to basically throw away my college degree by getting a dealing job and playing poker. But at the same time, I feel that I would be much happier in a low-responsibility job where I can play a ton of poker vs. a corporate job that is going to eat up 60-80+ hours of my week and cause stress. My brother (finance degree) works for citigroup, and often works 80+ hours a week, works weekends, and basically has no social life. I'm studying marketing, and put into a similar situation as him, I would go insane. I need a social life.

I go to a good school, I get good grades, and I could make more money (especially down the road) by taking a corporate job. But I will have more fun in vegas. Perhaps this is shortsighted and naive of me. I'm 20, I don't pay my own rent or even my tuition. So what do I know?

Also, I don't think you need a good college education to work in the pit. Shift managers and poker room managers have to start out as dealers anyway.

I have lived in Vegas and Henderson for the better part of 15 years.

There are basically two parts of Henderson; Green Valley, and Old(er) Henderson. Green Valley is a nice, safe area, and you can definitely find a decent one bedroom apartment for around $750 there. You could think of Green Valley as the suburbs of Vegas. It's a family friendly retreat, mostly free from casino life. From most parts of Green Valley it's about a 20 minute drive to center strip. Old Henderson is not as nice as Green Valley (on average), and is a bit further away from center strip (perhaps a 30 minute drive). Real estate is considerably less expensive in Old Henderson, and you could probably find an apartment in the $500 per month range no problem. But, I really wouldn't recommend Old Henderson. There's nothing going on out there. There isn't really much going on in Green Valley either (except for Green Valley Ranch, which is awesome).

You could find cheaper apartments much closer to the action in more central areas of Vegas.

I've lived in Henderson, NV since 1980. If you have read the last guys post, I live in the (old) part. This place is steadily becoming overpopulated. Personally, I like the part of Henderson I live in because I'm only 5-10 minutes away from Green Valley (where most of the better shopping, dining, etc. are done) and 15-20 minutes away from the Las Vegas Strip. When they start rationing water though, I'm getting the hell out of here. Oh yeah, Scotty Nguyen grew up in Henderson...heh.

yeah absoulutely.. i wasn't impling they need a college education, I bet most of them can barely add... But i think we all agree it's a cool and fun job to have for a yr or two

but you are right, the majority of them must of had prior dealing experience..
