an apc back-ups es series for your pc, router, and monitor so you can keep playing during power blinks and protect your equipment

Evan

Does that actually provide power if it goes out for a bit or is it just a good surge protector?

Power is not on the same grid as phone/cable. With an APC your equipment would be protected from damage and you could play through many blackouts. You must have router and other equipment plugged in though.

And Evan, yes the APC has a battery in it. Unless there are movies/DVD's you want, I would go with Astros advice.

Evan, don't be lazy. Go to best buy and type in APC in the search bar. Look for the ES series.

You will probably need a bigger one than this. I don't know your system specs so you have to take wattage into account.

I would think it would be. The internet is a military operation anyway. The whole point of the internet is fault tolerance.

Looks like COX cable is fault tolerant
http://www.cox.com/fairfax/Telephone/faqs.asp
In addition, if the problem is an electrical power outage, Cox provides back-up power so your phone keeps working.

Time Warner on the other hand doesn't sound to confident on their reliability.

should there be a power outage or other cable outage, Digital Phone will not be available.

Lame, I'm surprised DARPA/Congress allows that, especially in NYC.

If you think the military cares if comcast cable works when the power fails your nuts. They care about the backbone. Of course I am pretty sure the military pretty much built thier own network a while back. It might a requirement if the carrier wants to sell ip phones (911 requirement)

[/ QUOTE ]

A fault tolerant backbone is good for communication from base to base/bunker to bunker that happens to be near the backbone. Needless to say, not every base, power plant, aid worker, politician, government building, battlefield, or military base is near the backbone. I made the assumption that Congress might be interested in requiring internet companies to perform the simple task of supplying a backup generator for their information network. That isn't that big of a challenge. A backup diesel generator for internet doesn't have to be that big. I've used internet when the power has gone out so I know several places are like this. WTF is up with all the attitude? Seriously? The costs for this kind of fault tolerance is minimal and the benefits are actually rather large in the case of natural disasters/war. How am I nuts by simply thinking that Congress might have an interest in this? Do you have any idea how much the military spends on certain projects simply to ensure reliability? And yes the military has it's own network and they are developing another one called the Global Information Grid and another one called the TeraHertz Operational Reachback (THOR) and who knows how many more. Logistics and information collection/dissemination are vital to the military. The military could have 5 different internets and they would still want more.

BTW, if you had actually taken the time to really read my post you would see I already mentioned that NYC's cable may not be that fault tolerant. I also mentioned I was surprised that Congress/Military would would be ok with this considering their mentality on this kind of stuff. An internet that works in all locations would mean that every politician, every government official, every aid worker would have access to information in a crisis. If thinking for 1 second that some of these people would happen to employ comcast to get the job done (or add one more tier of security) makes me crazy, then I guess I'm crazy.

or you could sell it to someone for $40 cash and buy a bottle of nice whiskey

It depends how big the blackout is. I have separate UPSs, one for my computer, and one for my cable modem and router. The computer one is pretty big, but can only keep me up for about 10 minutes. The other is fairly small, but keeps the internet up for hours. I can turn on my laptop and assuming it's charged, be good to go for a few hours.

We have long outages once or twice a year. The only time I lost internet access and power at the same time was during that major northeast blackout.

"Tilt" isn't out on DVD yet, so you'll have to get either an APC as mentioned, or maybe just a bigger hard drive to hold all your porn. I think CC has a 160gig'er for $60 after rebate this week.
