I started playing poker a few months ago. Until then, my main game was high stakes backgammon. In recent years, many professional backgammon players moved on to play poker, because of the tremendous growing popularity of the game and higher equity potential. One of them is a good friend of mine, James from London. His nickname in the backgammon internet site (and on PokerStars as well) is luckyjim. And he proved it all right. James won a WSOP event after only one year of poker experience. One night I come home at 3 AM after a losing backgammon session, turned the tube on, and watched luckyjim win 450,000$ on ESPN. Why not me?, I said to myself. So I give him a call.
"Hey Jimbo, I wanna start playing poker, please gimmi a list of books to read".
"You wanna be a card player?" he replied, "I will give you better advice then those books".
"Shoot my friend, I'll do anything you say!".
"Well, get your ass in a low limit game. play one table only. no music. no distraction. zero. play 8 hours a day. first day, you FOLD EVERY HAND!!. second day, play only AA, and be greatfull. on the third day you can play KK as well. but only if they are both black. after a week you can play AK offsuit. the rest of the time you observe and take notes."
"Are you jokin ?!" I said.
"No. try it. if you can't do it don't bother playing poker, and dont waste my time."
"Sure I can...its a piece of cake James".
"You will thank me for this. I would have made so much more money if I did that."
Ok, so I sit down in a 25-50 cent game on PartyPoker, throwing away every hand I am dealt. After 15 minutes I had notes on every sucker in the table. And as you can guess, the notes were almost identical. After 30 minutes I am really bored. and tortured. I had to watch the monkeys have fun while I lose money. And I missed out straights, flushes, boats, you name it. If I would play every hand I could buy a yacht.
But no. I am not allowed to play any hand today. A little porn to break the unbearable stress? no, no. Can B.B. King ease the pain? sorry, no music allowed. So I started fantasizing. Can't blame a man for his thoughts...I had oral sex (both ways...) with the tough chick in seat 8, and dumbass on seat 2 was watching. Kinky stuff. I wake up only to find two sexy red aces in the hole. And its MY HOLE!!. These two started talking to me. begging for their lives.
"Please...don't muck us ! we belong with you..."
"Sorry, but I gotta. orders from above" I said with sorrow.
"Are you gonna listen to that sick idiot ?? we all know he got lucky in Vegas, he's so full of himself isn't he"
"Listen...believe me...this hurts me more than it hurts you...but I have to...try to understand!"
But I couldn't. They had a point, lets admit it. I pushed the raise button before getting timed out, and won a huge pot. 2 bucks. AHHHH!!! that felt great...better than that 69 with the hot one on seat 8. It was like breaking a strict diet. Like a "tiny" drink for an alcoholic off the wagon. next hand was 8 /images/graemlins/heart.gif 5 /images/graemlins/heart.gif. Suited connectors ! I call. I played every hand, and guys, I am telling you, it was fun. I even won a dollar and fifty cents...cool!.
Next day the phone rings. its James. "Well, how did you do?"
"Good and Bad..." I said.
"What's good?" He asked.
"I won"...
"I knew it you maniac...you cant do it" he was laughing his heart out. "So I know what's the bad part now as well...don't tell me".
"Yeah.. you guessed it man".
"Well listen, call me when you succeed. trust me on this one my friend".
A few weeks later I did it. And he was right. I challenge you guys to try it...and tell everybody how did you do.
