I'll answer the easy questions and perhaps others can take it up in more detail if they'd like.

1) Yes, that kind of day-to-day swing is very common.
2) You will experience much bigger swings if you play a lot.
3) Yes you can beat the games in the long term.
4) No, there is no mechanical hu strategy, especially in NL. You have to adapt. There are the basics like knowing your odds on draws, what hands do well in all-in situations, etc, but beyond that there is a lot of feel and anticipating your opponents.
5) Many high limit players have corresponding egos and bankrolls that would probably make you vomit. A lot of money probably gets sloshed around and there are probably long term winners and long term losers on the edges of each category. The regulars also probably prey on the occasional fish that "takes a shot".
