View Full Version : Reccomend a digital camera for me

Won a lot yesterday, therefore I need to buy a digital camera to post photos of the 2+2 Vegas meet up. I want something with 5 or greater meg photos... MUST be fast, and have great optics. Small size is a major plus, but I would ideally like a small camera that I can lens attachments for as I need them.

Recommendations? I must be able to buy it in Vegas... so recommend a store if you know one!

Nikon D90 (http://www.nikonusa.com/template.php?cat=1&grp=2&productNr=25214)

Not too small, but not many SLR's are. It'll take any Nikon F mount lens (supposedly). If I had the money I'd buy this (or another F4, but they aren't digital).

If you don't really need the interchangeable lenses, HP makes some nice cameras. This (http://www.shopping.hp.com/cgi-bin/hpdirect/shopping/scripts/product_detail/product_detail_view.jsp?BV_SessionID=@@@@023174763 7.1108287842@@@@&BV_EngineID=ccdladddlfleeeicfngcf kmdflldfgg.0&landing=null&category=digital_cameras &subcat1=see_all&product_code=Q2232A%23ABA&catLeve l=3) ones similar to one I have and it's damn nice..and fairly compact. The 945 is also very nice, better optics, but bigger.

Agreed. The D70 has a fairly quick shutter and saves (jpgs) to the card at a good clip. It is faster than my D100, but I wouldn't trade for the world. /images/graemlins/grin.gif

And if you really want to spend some serious cash you can try and get the 12 megapixel D2X /images/graemlins/tongue.gif

You should be able to get the D70 at one of the major chain stores (ritz, wolf, whatever the hell they call it) at a decent price.

Nikon rocks.

Those guys sound like they know more about cameras than me, but I'll chime in anyway.

I just got the Canon Powershot A95 earlier this week. Just been playing around with it a bit so far, I like it. It got pretty good reviews on Dpreview.com too. I know it does have lens attachments available.

I think it's a decent one if you don't want to spend as much as some of the other 5 megapixels or higher.

I just got a D70 about 3 weeks ago, and I absolutely love it. Get a high speed CF card. Also, instead of going w/ their recommended 18-70mm, I got a Nikkor 28-200 for about the same price. I picked up mine from beach camera (http://www.beachcamera.com) for $900 for the body, and I think $300 for the lens. Definitely worth the money.

Here's some downsized images from a few days ago

Panasonic FZ20 is the best non-SLR digital camera you can get. It's bigger than the A95 but worth it.

Whatever camera you get, spend a littel for GOOD rechargeable batteries as digital cameras eat them. My camera went through disposables and cheap rechargeables very quickly. I spent a little and got Kodak 1850 mAh's and they last easily 5x longer.

I think you meant this one (http://www.steves-digicams.com/2004_reviews/w1.html) the DSC-W1.

I bought one for my wife for Christmas and she absolutely loves it. I don't have a ton of experience with digital cameras but I think this one has most of the things that the OP was looking for.

What do U guys think about the Sony T1? The smaller the better, as long as there is no lag time and the image quality doesn't suffer. I will check out Digital Camera Veview as suggested.

dpreview.com, which nolan mentioned, has some of the most thorough and loong reviews you can find on digital cameras. They dont have reviews for all cameras but if you narrow down your choices, try to see if you can get reviews there first.

The W1 is superior to the T1 in image clarity, durability, and functionality.

Wasn't the point to buy the damn camera IN VEGAS? If there's no group picture out of all of these trip reports, I'm going to be disappointed.

You should post a review when you get it; I want that camera already.
