Why not go for the checkraise on the river so you can trap BB for a bet or two?

Simply because MP3's last to act and I don't want to rely on him betting. His play looks a lot like a K with a low kicker, AT or something that he may just choose to check through.

No guarantee that BB is coming along for 1 bet, much less 2. Betting the river is the safe option (and also the correct one).

You need to be pretty sure that he holds a medium strength hand and that he will check it through to make betting out more profitable (for simplicity I'll just assume BB missed some draw and is folding no matter what for now). Let's start by assuming it's 50/50 either way that he has a good hand or an ok hand and either way villian won't be raising/reraising.

If you bet and he has an good hand:
You bet. He calls. +1BB

If you bet and he has an ok hand:
You bet. He calls. +1BB
------
Avg = +1BB

If you check and he has a good hand:
You check. He bets. You raise. He calls. +2BB

If you check and he has an ok hand:
You check. He checks. +0BB
-----
Avg +1BB

I'm nowhere near 50% sure that he he holds a marginal hand here. He called two bets cold on the flop and bet on the turn. Plus by checking I still feel you may be more likely to get the BB to add some money to the pot.
