Could be your video card, or your computer itself, not sure what/how to check though.

Got mine today and had no problems changing the resolution... you might need to update your video card's drivers if you haven't done so before

how?

and did you have to do anything other than hook up the monitor? if not, then maybe it's my graphics card.

did you try just upping the resolution in your Display control panel?

yes, it only lists the same choices I had with my other monitor.

you might need a better video card with higher resolution, shouldn't be too expensive.

I have a hard time believing that his video card can't go up to 1600x1200 unless it's an onboard card. Even my old Geforce 2 could go that high.

Could you go right-click on My Computers -> Properties -> Hardware -> Device Manager -> Display Adapters and tell us what's listed under there?

Not to stray from the OPs problem but will a NVIDIA GeForce FX Go5100 be able to run a 1600X1200 monitor? Thanks.

Default answer is yes. Like my earlier post, I assume all half-decent video cards can unless proven otherwise.

I'm sure most video cards can support it. If you just plugged in your monitor, you might want to try restarting it and letting windows detect the new monitor. If you just swapped the monitors it might not work.

Are the drivers for the 2001FP installed? Chances are that Windows thinks it's a "default display" or a "plug 'n' play monitor" and doesn't realize you've bought 4-tabling goodness. Update monitor drivers; most display problems are caused by this.

it does still say plug and play monitor, but I put the disk that came with the monitor in and it said that I already had the best match for my equipment

Just uncheck that stupid assed "hide modes this monitor cannot display" and then go set it to 1600x1200. This setting is on the "monitor" tab on the popup you get if you click the "advanced" button next to where you set the resolution.

did that, but it didn't add any new resolutions for me to choose. /images/graemlins/frown.gif

I Googled for that but couldn't come up with any specs for the video card.

Is it an onboard video card? What Dell computer model are you using? Hopefully I can Google the model number and find the video card specs.

That is an onboard video card.

I have a Dell Dimension 2100

Ok, apparently your system has old, crappy onboard graphics and you need to add in a PCI video card to get the resolutions you want.
http://www.short-media.com/forum/archive/index.php/t-5928.html
At that site they seem to recommend a either a Radeon 7000 or a Geforce MX flavor in PCI. Please remember when looking at video cards that AGP is dominant, not PCI so you do have to look, and PCI IS NOT, repeat NOT the same a PCI-X or "PCI Express" (neither would work in your computer).

this is your problem. you probably need your monitor drivers installed.

right click desktop -> properties -> settings -> advanced -> monitor -> properties -> driver -> update driver

pop in the cd. if it tells you that you already have the best match, you need to override this. i think theres an option to 'choose from the list of all compatible drivers' or something.

So I should get the Radeon 7000 PCI?? Can I install that myself if I don't know much about computers? Thanks

You can. But you make enough on your poker roll to just go ahead and card the thing into your local CompUSA, etc and have them install it for you. That way you don't have to worry about Fing something up and if they F it up, you can bust their nuts with a ball-peen hammer.

Ok anyone with a brain should be able to install a video card, AGP or PCI..

I think you missed my first sentence... People can do a lot of things they pay others to do for them.

On an install scale of light bulb to kidney, a video card is basically equivalent to a halogen bulb. It goes in very easily, you just have to be careful while putting it in.
