About 2 months ago, I bought a second system from a friend. The system is fine, but I have an ATI 9800 Pro video card that just refuses to work with it. It freezes, refuses to load up on Windows. I used my video card on my other system and it works without a problem, so it appears that it may be a motherboard problem on my second system.

My second system has a built in LAN, vid card, sound card - all the stuff that I don't like but seems to come pre-packaged nowadays as standard with most motherboards.

Anyways, I am looking to buy a new motherboard. Something reliable and compatible with my P4 3.0 Ghz chip. Can anyone recommend something around the $100 - $150 range? I prefer it if it didn't have all that built in LAN, Video, sound card stuff in it, but if it does - that's ok as long as my regular video card will work.

Thanks.

Lawrence

Lawrence,

My personal preference is Asus boards, though you may have to pay a little more for them. I have the P4P800 Deluxe board and it's been great! I'm in Ontario, but I always buy from www.ncix.com (http://www.ncix.com) in Burnaby. They usually have great deals.

You'll have to check all your specs. to be sure, but I'm 90% sure this board will work with your processor.

Asus is a good brand and this is a recommended board.

Socket 478 mobo - 800 MHz FSB

Asus P4P800 (http://www.asus.com/products/mb/socket478/p4p800/overview.htm)

On the system that freezes, try disabling the onboard video card through BIOS and flashing the BIOS as well.

I can't suggest any P4 boards because I'm not familiar with them, but MSI has been known recently to make boards that bust caps pretty easily. Asus has a solid reputation despite my lemon.
