I used to think that any movie over 7.0 on imdb basically had to be pretty good. This was a few years ago, then there started sprouting tons of movies above 7.0, and some of them flat out suck.

My vote goes for Boondock Saints. This movie is somehow at 7.7 currently. It is an absolute POS, with a ridiculous story, humorous moral messages, and really awful acting/directing. Willem DaFoe is in it, but it is probably his worst performance ever. I can not understand why this movie is above a 5.0.

Any other movies above 7.5 that you guys feel similarly about?

I like how the Lord of the Rings trilogy comes close to the Godfather. Quite a joke.

I looked real quick and the only movie I noticed that I really thought was terrible was MASH. I like other films by Altman, but i think MASH is a steaming turd.

Lord of the Rings 3. I think that one's the Return of the King. Granted it was fine since it was better than being at my [censored] boarding school at the time, still a giant waste of 3 hours where I could've been plotting to escape/reading ToP/sleeping.

2 nasty hours of legitemacy. It was like watching a Tony Allen highlight real. Then that hour when I could not figure anything else. I guess I'm being unfair. Mathematically, this is how I put it up:
Hour 1: 10
Hour 2: 10
Hour 3: 0
Total: 20
20/3= 6.6666666666666666667
Therefore, it's undeserving of the 7.5 status. JMO.

I thought Magnolia was pretty disappointing...but I know a lot of people who think it's one of the greatest films ever.

Indiana jones and the Last Crusade?? Really??

I haven't seen the Lord of the Rings movies but I can't imagine that they warrant being rated so highly.
I'll have to watch one or two of them just so that I can go on IMdB and legitimarely give them a crappy rating.

Two of my top 10 films both got 7.9's:
Dog Day Afternoon and Trainspotting

I didn't see Airplane in the liast of 7.8's and higher...obviously this list is VERY flawed.

A little surprised that Leon/The Professional got an 8.3. I liked it...but I didn't expect it to rate that highly.

Memento as an 8.6 strikes me as a bit too high. It's tied for the 14th greatest film EVER for crying out loud.

I haven't seen all of Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. Is it really that freaking good? What parts I did see didn't exactly draw me in.

I've seen 32 of the top 50 films on that list...
and 51 of the top 100.

Any of the LOTR movies don't deserve half the attention they get. I've seen all of them and not one of them has interested me for more then half an hour. Personally i think Harry Potter is a better fairy tale. As far as matrix and fight club go, of course watching them more than once isnt as compelling as watching them the first time. Regardless, When i walked out of both of those movies i felt like they blew my mind, definately in my top 20.

Of course if you want a real movie you could always go watch American Psycho, that movie never gets old (check the avatar, bitches).

On top of that my ex girlfriend found them to be mind opening. I am not saying they are worthless, but I find it amusing when people think there are all these hidden things to "get" and if you get them you have suceeded in your movie watching experience. Obviously Lynch writes a complex script, there is no doubt there, but his motives are flawed in my opinion. Now if you were planning on watching lost highway or mullholland drive while frying on acid, now thats a different story. Retort?

This is list is way biased towards modern movies. I doubt in 10 years anyone will be mentioning pirates of the caribian as an all time classic. I am guessing the voting is a bit skewed by cultists (ie all the people voting for star wars. I am surprised I didn't see Star Trek II on the list:)) and movie buffs (why there would be a lot of foriegn/limited release films). The ones on the list I have seen are all decent movies but some of them definitely are not my cup of tea.

I found it interesting that Gone with the wind is so low (143). Sort of scary when Aliens is rated higher. I like Aliens a lot (the best bug hunt movie ever) but didn't exactly bring home 8 oscars:)

I think Snatch is an unbelievably good movie. As far as LOTR goes, I'm a huge fantasy/D&D type nerd and I still don't love the movies. I think the first movie is the best of the 3 by far. The first movie is a fantasy movies, the 2nd and 3rd sometimes just feel like action movies with orcs instead of people. I liked Lost in Translation a lot, I think it is an excellent film. I hated Pirates of the Caribbean, and I'm still surprised so many people liked it. I found Boondock Saints to be mildy entertaining but I really don't understand its cult following. I like both Groundhog's Day and Fargo a ton. And Fight Club rules.

I'm only 23, and haven't seen half the movies on this list, but I don't think that disqualifies me. I went on a kick a few years ago of watching films nominated for "Best Picture" from 1960 - present. I've seen like half of them. Anyway, the hardest film for me to get through was "Barry Lyndon"

It SUCKED. I couldn't finish it. Picture the setting of "The Patriot," combined with the boring parts from "Eyes Wide Shut," combined with freaky English accents a la "Clockwork Orange." Something like that.

No, I'm not an uncultured moron with no taste for good films. But I also HATED the English Patient. Flame away.

To all of you who liked Boondock Saints: I have to admit I approached watching the movie in a different way. I had heard about how great it was, and was expecting to see a serious action/investigation movie. Of course you can admit it is not really a serious movie.

This movie was just goofy, but I guess enjoyable to some? It was no surprise to me the director had never directed any movie before, or since (and its been 6 years). Things like having Dafoe dance around like a fool, or pretend he is shooting along with the brothers was so stupid. Also, the director wrote it with his brother, and they were clearly thinking about themselves as the main characters, which made it even more lame - - - Hey let's have them be able to speak all known languages, be loved by everyone in the community, and be able to easily kill the most deadly men in the city!! I just hated everything about it, maybe if I looked at it as a goofy, campy flick I could enjoy it. But... Im pretty sure Ill never watch it again.

For Asian movies, the criteria of how good they are seems to be how much money they spent. I believe these are the 3 most expensive-to-make films in asian cinema history. Note that Crouch Tiger was the only one with a developed plot, and also the only one that had much more to it than beautiful scenery and fighting. I think Hero and House rest way too much on the beauty of the art in the films.

I think part of the reason they are rated so highly is because those who are fans REALLY love them and obviously rate them highly...whereas those who don't care for them either don't go to see them or just fall asleep in the middle and thus don't vote on them.

Agree completely. Crouching Tiger is probably in my top three or four movies ever. I liked Hero but don't have any desire to see it again. Flying Daggers was just a mess. The love story was terrible, as they gave you no reason to care about it, painting both male leads as rogues early in the movie and there wasn't enough hand-to-hand combat, despite being far more violent than Crouching Tiger.

Sup bro!

You knock Star Wars and Saving Pvt. Ryan??? How can you say Star Wars is ranked too high in terms of craft? Lucas revolutionized film making as we know it with that movie. Every single movie today containing visual and sound effects owes so much to Lucas. You know Pixar, the makers of Toy Story, Finding Nemo and The Incredibles? Yeah, thanks Lucas. You know THX, the standard in sound quality for films and video? Yeah, thanks Lucas.

And as far as Saving Pvt. Ryan vs. Full Metal Jacket goes, you, sir, are a moron. Full Metal Jacket is half a movie. The boot camp part is pretty amusing, but once they hit the sound stage (what is meant to be Vietnam) it drops to mediocrity. Saving Pvt. Ryan on the other hand is just splendid. From the most intense opening in movie history (Omaha Beach) through the final battle this movie is spectacular, in every possible way.

Cheers,

Much better than Pulp Fiction, so basically PF is too high.

Shawshank redemption at number two is silly. It was a good twist movie and well acted but the directing was just average. I might be biased though - about ten minutes into the film I realised I'd read the book, which kinda ruins the whole thing for you.

LOTR were dull movies. Doing justice to the book in movie format can't be done IMHO.

I thought Boondock Saints sucked. The action was good but action is cheap. The religious stuff is cheesy and the whole "moral dilemma" thing is boring to me.

Yes but 100x better than shark tale which is clearly the worst of the new animated stle of movies to come out since Toy Story.

maybe great interesting movies out now like "hitch" and "the wedding date" may not be as boring to you.

At a brief glance it looks like Monthy Python chimes in as the first true comedy at # 57? Three LOTR in the top ten and this movie is at 57. I hate people.
