If on ntl or telewest they have a newsgroup setup then can use alt.binaries.mp3 and then the music you like.

if you look at www.slyck.com (http://www.slyck.com) it will take you through how to setup a newsgroup reader (I recommend xnews).

Also that site is really good with guides and walkthroughs of all the main ways to get files.

Whats with this new Napster service? £15 a month and you can have as much music you like as long as you have a compatible MP3 player, i.e. not a iPod.

Wtf seriously? UK too?

EDIT: Oh wait, can you still not do anything with the tracks ala Napster?

astroglide

streaming only. but it has more music than napster, the songs stream much quicker, and the service doesn't constantly screw up like napster did for me ('unable to locate this track, please try again later').

Are we anywhere near a service, e.g. $50-$100 a month, where we an download infinite amounts and own all the songs? Surely thats going to happen eventually.

Honestly, I'm not so sure. I think something like listen.com hooked up to all of our sound systems and with some remote-controlled user interface is coming pretty soon.

with pervasive wireless internet connections, sure. it won't be that long until streaming = virtual ownership regardless of where you are.

that will not happen anytime soon, if ever. the deal is, that any legit mp3 service has to pay royalties on songs they sell on a per track basis. so if my track on itunes gets downloaded by 20 people, itunes has to pay ASCAP/BMI a royalty on each of those downloads, and in turn I get a check from ASCAP/BMI.

Basically, it's a very flawed business model because you are paying for every track everyone dowloads, but you are only getting a flat rate from subscribers. so it can quickly become a -EV proposition if everyone starts downloading a lot of music. other companies have tried this model and it quite simply is not sustainable.

so the answer is that it won't happen until the way we pay royalties to artists changes.

The catch is, many of the most popular songs are "download only", meaning you have to pay for them on a track by track basis and they don't come as part of the subscription service.

what are the chances that iTunes does a monthly fee thing to fill your ipod with whatever like napster is doing?

turnipmonster
02-10-2005, 03:50 PM
the thing about the napster service is you aren't buying the files, you are essentially renting them. if you don't renew your subscription, the files "expire" and you can no longer play them. if you want to own the file, you have to pay a dollar just like on itunes.

I think it's a pretty neat service from napster, but it's way different than them selling you a file, and they don't make that particularly obvious. I guess "owning" music may become outdated at some point, though.

just got this and have been listening to it for the past couple hours. its pretty cool and ill probably keep it after the trial period. my main problem right now is i wish the library was a little bigger. some music i wanted (bright eyes, etc) isnt there. i dont like the idea of switching between this and winamp depending on what i want to listen to, but oh well.

i used to be pretty anti-paying for music, but decided to give this a whirl. its pretty easy to find new bands, and youre listening to them right away. for those of us (all of us) who spend too time at their computer, you might want to give this a shot.

This is what bugs me. I hate paying individually for tracks but I really don't want to be 'renting' them, as you put it, either. I'd happily pay a couple of thousand a year so I knew I could have anything I wanted at any point and have it forever.

A 20g ipod can hold about 5k songs and so theoretically if you bought each song individually to fill it up it would cost 5k. I would fill up an ipod in a year if I prepaid 1k and then just downloaded anything anytime I wanted to. Maybe I personally wouldnt pay 1k now but I would definitly pay something like 500 easy.

i guess this thing would probably just take file sharing and piracy to new levels. oh well. im enjoying this streaming right now.

I just started using AllofMP3 (http://www.allofmp3.com) last month and so far I'm really happy with it. 2 cents per meg for downloading, you get to choose your bit rate and their explorer interface is pretty nice. I generated a one time use credit card number just to be safe. I used to always hate paying for music but I really think this is one of the best and cheapest options out there right now.

i used kazaa lite but now I use bittorent for most, you can get entire records at a time which is really sweet, the porblem is that I cant find as much stuff as a I can on kazaa.

For the record 90% of the music I buy is on CD, the other 10% comes from iTunes. I was just trying to help the OP out...I use WMR for um,...other things.

as astro said, if you are one of those people who thinks musicians should get paid for what they do, allofmp3.com isn't exactly the best choice.
