Im almost embarrased to ask this, but what the hell is fold equity?

It generally refers to picking up the blinds preflop with a raise. If the blinds are $100-200, and you figure there is a Z% chance the remaining players will fold if you raise, then your fold equity is $300 * Z%.

Z has a lot of variables, of course. How many players left to act? Are they extremely deep stacked or extremely short stacked? If so, they may be more apt to call with less than premium hands. If it's a tournament, how close are you to the bubble or a significant payout increase? The closer you are, the tighter most people play against a raise. How strongly do the blinds defend? Etc.
