View Full Version : Asking a big favor, long HH inside

My heads up game needs a lot of work. Sometimes I'm able to take total control of the game, but other times, particularly when my opponent is hyper-aggressive, I'm just lost. This is the heads-up hand history of a tourney I just played, $5.50 on PokerStars. My opponent had been a very bad player throughout the game, but when we got three-handed, he hit two lucky hands to first double through the big stack and then bust him. I was confident that I could run over him, but I just couldn't seem to get a good read on him, plus I got crap cards (even for heads up) for a very long time. Am I just too weak to not be willing to raise with crap, especially knowing I may just be re-raised and forced to drop? If someone would be willing to browse through this HH and give me some pointers, it would be much appreciated.. I'm sure I made a lot of horrible errors, please be as critical as possible /images/graemlins/smile.gif

I'm EtherealEcho.

The following two back to back hands are a common theme I noticed about myself when I started out. I overbet my weaker hands, and underbet my strong hands. Raise your KK the amount you raised your 45o.

Some more common mistakes that I made when I was new. If I showed strength with an average hand like TJo, and my opponent showed more strength, it's like it was a mental battle. Fold and move on. Play hands where you have an edge.

*** SUMMARY ***

Board [4s 8s 4d Ks]
Seat 3: RealSack (big blind) collected (5650)
Seat 6: EtherealEcho (button) (small blind) folded on the Turn

Hindsight is 20/20, but it would have been cheaper to check the flop. 2,000 chips is a lot to see the turn with a very weak hand/draw.

Here is another sign (a pattern perhaps, you'll have to do more homework) where you are not building a pot when you have likely a superior PreFlop hand. You need to raise the pot here, some normal amount, as not to tip off Villain.

Much better, raising a hand when you have a likely better preflop hand. In hind sight, you need to raise all of your hands a consistent amount. Like 3 or 4 times BB. So whether you're raising AA or 23o, always raise the same amount.

You might have been able to extract more chips here by not pushing. Losing his 200 chips here to a bad flop is ok. It marginally helps your stack. Try and pickup more chips when you have good preflop hands.

I'm sure I made a lot of horrible errors, please be as critical as possible

[/ QUOTE ]

I thought the hands dealt to you were very workable. FWIW, I think you'll learn more by not getting great cards.

What I noticed was that you felt confident going into the H/U scenario with villain, but he chipped away at you and wore you down. THAT SHOULD BE YOUR STRATEGY. You need to make sure all of your actions are covert. Show more consistency in your preflop betting patterns, so villain is unable to read you. Build pots when you have better hands. Bottom pair, with no draws is not a good hand to be playing, if your bet is reraised. Don't compound mistakes. Check your ego at the door. Have fun, and be aggressive.

Good luck...

I'm replying to all your posts in one thread so I don't clutter it up.

KK hand: I botched this hand pretty bad. I'm not sure why I went all-in on the flop. My thinking at the time was that 1) I hadn't done anything like that yet, 2) I was hoping he'd think it was a desperation move to try to steal the pot. It almost worked (took him about 45 seconds to fold) but didn't. That probably was a key mistake in the tourney.

K3s hand: This was one of the big hands that had me baffled. With how aggressive he had been, I knew he didn't always have a hand. I probably should have folded the flop (or re-raised preflop?). Hitting a pair on the turn was easily the worst thing that happened to me. I just couldn't bring myself to fold, I felt I had him beat. Part of the problem was, again, my inability to read him.

A9 hand: The reason I just completed rather than raising was because he had raised me almost every single time I completed. I was expecting a raise that I could go over the top of. Fancy play syndrome?

A7 hand: I figured at this point that I was in push-or-fold mode; that combined with the fact that he was outplaying me so much post-flop led to this push.

I typically do keep consistent raises, but it seemed he was reading right through them anyway, so I started trying to mix it up to throw him off. I know there isn't much not worth playing in heads up, but I find it extremely difficult to play a hand like 63o or 27s, especially if I'm getting raised. And I have a lot of trouble playing these hands postflop, too, because I can never quite tell where I'm at. He pretty much forced me to either raise or fold preflop, because if I just called in the SB, he nearly always raised.

Some of my big problems include what to raise/call raises/re-raise/fold with, and how to play post-flop with mediocre to bad hands that have missed.

Anyway, thanks a lot for the comments, I really appreciate it /images/graemlins/smile.gif I just need to keep getting in more practice.

Admittedly, I am not an expert postflop player.

On to your comments:
KK hand: I botched this hand pretty bad. I'm not sure why I went all-in on the flop. My thinking at the time was that 1) I hadn't done anything like that yet, 2) I was hoping he'd think it was a desperation move to try to steal the pot. It almost worked (took him about 45 seconds to fold) but didn't. That probably was a key mistake in the tourney.

Be sure to learn from it. In order for villain to call your allin, he will have to have AA, KK, QQ, JJ, or AK IMO. Otherwise, he'll be content to continue to chip away at your stack, and your ego.

Read his bets. He reraised your huge bet. Fold. Bottom pair with no draws is leaking chips if you call. I like folding preflop if you're unsure of your hand.

I just couldn't bring myself to fold Great, you admitted it! Now recognize it next time. FOLD.

A9 hand: The reason I just completed rather than raising was because he had raised me almost every single time I completed. I was expecting a raise that I could go over the top of. Fancy play syndrome?

Play your game. Don't play his game. Build your image by consistency in your betting. Wildly betting different amounts, is probably giving him clues about your hands. Here's the clue that I see. Has nothing, bets big. Has something, bets little. Recipe for second place.

A7 hand: I figured at this point that I was in push-or-fold mode; that combined with the fact that he was outplaying me so much post-flop led to this push.

I hope you're able to read the above statement and realize that this is what is being read between the lines. "I concede."

I think you would benefit by switching to Party Poker as soon as your bankroll permits you to play the $10+1s there. IMHO, your current level/knowledge of play will benefit from fewer post flop decisions. Party Poker is all about preflop decisions. Your ROI will probably be higher. Do not play the $5s at Party as the vig is atrocious.

Keep your chin up. We all started somewhere. I've been where you are, it can get better.

AlmightyJay

Yeah, I'd like to move over to Party, but I want to build up a bankroll (and try to assure that I'm at least a break even player!) before I do that. I've been playing for about 6 months, but I don't have a lot of time to play.. I'm a college student with a job, a band, and a drinking habit /images/graemlins/smile.gif Right now I'm working on a 30 SNGS in 30 days "challenge" as both an incentive to myself to play more, and to start getting a sample together.

Anyway, thanks again for all your help.. I'll keep plugging away at the tourneys and posting hands here for advice!

One thing i found interesting about these hands is that both of you min raised when you had big pairs, but didn't do it at any other times (at least that i saw, i skimmed a bit toward the end). I think this illustrates the importance of raising a consistent amount (or a randomly variable amount if you prefer that school of thought).

The play i thought was the most dubious was calling the raise on the flop with JT, nothing wrong with taking a stab at it, but once you get raised when you have virtually nothing, you need to either fold or attempt to resteal.

Thanks for posting an entire heads up hand history, we so often analyze only single hands and sometimes the context for a hand is really interesting.

Not only do I see -- I can *hear* the vacuum taking the hero's chips on this hand. This is a major hemmorage. You will see *many* poor players play this way in SNGs. Then you will notice that other players start to follow thinking that somehow b/c everyone is doing it that they should too. This is even more reason not to engage in such calling/betting behavior.

Take a stab at the ragged flop perhaps but then jettison your hand quick-style. /images/graemlins/grin.gif

This sort of thing is overrated IMHO for such a low buyin. No one is paying attention to your betting pattern and you won't play these chumps again. That being said, you still have to know what you're doing and what the consequences of raising with various hands will be.

I'm assuming that the PS $5.5 is somewhat similar to the PP $11.

I haven't read the whole history but would say that recognizing that your opponent always min-bets/raises big pairs does not mean that he realizes you are doing the exact same thing. The min-bet/raise is very likely a necessary ROI maximizing tool in the low limit SNG player's arsenal. Try watching how many times players are goaded into coming over the top with marginal hands and/or more willing to call off their stack later on after hitting with their marginal hand.

You and I both know that we don't know what the $5s are like. But I think we can make the assumption that they are probably somewhere between the fake money and the $11s, IMO.

Back to your point though. I agree with your assessment that no one is paying attention. But do you agree that learning better betting behavior comes from learning to read your opponents betting. Thus, the best way to identify little things is to keep your betting patterns consistent?

IMHO, at this stage of the learning curve, Hero will benefit from some consistency. Especially if it helps in the ego area. At least, it's what helped me. Thoughts and interpretations appreciated I'm sure.

Something occurred to me in my dreams last night ... /images/graemlins/cool.gif

One of the more effective moves on the lower levels is the check-raise. Frankly, I didn't see one check-raise in your HHs. You indicated that you intended to check-raise a strong hand, but I never saw you bluff a check-raise. I used to bluff check-raise on the $11s all the time, with great success. Something to think about, and don't do it often!

Right now I'm working on a 30 SNGS in 30 days "challenge" as both an incentive to myself to play more, and to start getting a sample together.

I'm interested in some other posters from this forums opinion on this "challenge." At your rate, that's 365 games in a year. Many posters here play that many in a month.

My history. I played about 60 SnGs a month at Absolute Poker (terrible site) before I discovered 2+2's website. The only reason I was a breakeven player at AP was because of the bonus money I earned there. I lost my first $100, and I made $89 on my second hundred deposit. (Read: I was a losing player /images/graemlins/tongue.gif) My 2+2 registration date coincides with when I switched to Party Poker.

Not too long after that date, I met another 2+2er in a PP $22 game, whom I still talk to frequently about how to better my game. His first question to me was "What are your goals." I had never thought about this.

Long story short, he told me my goals were a little too ambitious (and ambiguous) at my stage, and that my current goals should be to play X many games a month. In fact, his recommendation was 150 or more. On Dec 4th, I began recording all my SnGs in Aleo's super penultimate spreadsheet. Since that date, I've played 969 Sit n Gos.

To my point, I think you should consider a bigger "challenge." IMO, the real challenge you face is limiting your games to just 30 per month. Another reason to switch to Party Poker, as the games are much faster there. When I was tracking them, they averaged about 40 minutes each.

I'd be happy to talk to you more, PM me.

Yes, the hero may indeed benefit from some consistency. Perhaps the betting pattern learning flowchart reads like this:

1. bet amt is haphazard due to ill-advised bluffing, raising on a whim, etc
2. bet amt = strength of hand
3. bet amt = opposite of strength of hand
4. bet amt = the same regardless of hand
5. bet amt = fluctuates but in a hand masking manner -- highly contextual and done according to expert reads

I fluctuate between 3 and 4 -- hopefully in a manner close to 5 but I doubt it, /images/graemlins/grin.gif.
