View Full Version : Player profile review

Below is my review of a player profile database started about 2 months ago. As you can see only about 40% are rated and have any detailed notes. Half have nothing at all. These ratings are very subjective and are rated 1 to 9(best to worst).

There is a bell-shaped curve with group 4(average by-the-book player) and group 5(average player with loose starting hand requirements and some poor play) in the middle with most of the players.

I have given the different percentages of the playing styles in each group.

Most players in group 4 break about even and the players in group 5 lose about 1 BB/hr.

These groups do not give a clear picture of the make-up of an average game since the higher ranked players are almost always around and the lower ranked players always disappear. Most games are made up of 4's and 3's with a few 5's tossed in.

For reference, you should consider that we are talking about how a player would fare in a $10-20 Hold'em game or a $20-100 buy-in tournament.

Is it getting late and I'm getting sleepy, because I don't see the point of this player profile review?

Wake up Nikko. He's telling you how you can improve your game.

Postulates = Pn Assumptions = An

P1. Players in group 4 average 0BB/hr.

P2. Players in group 5 average -1BB/hr.

A1. Players in group 3 average >0 BB/hr - let's say +0.5BB/hr for argument.

P3. Most games are made up of 4's and 3's with a few 5's tossed in.

A2. Supposing a mix of four 4's, four 3's, and one 5 at a table other than you, the average EV of the rest of the table is approximately (4x0)+ (4x0.5) + (1x-1) = +1BB/hr.

P4. Poker is a zero-sum game. (Actually negative due to rake.)

A5. In the average lineup, you rate to lose 1BB/hr.

Conclusion: the average game is not worth playing in. In fact, given this distribution there would be very few games in which your EV would be greater than 0.5BB/hr at most.

I would not play in a game with four 3's, four 4's and a single five. It is unlikely that any of the other 3's would either for any period of time. That's part of the reason they would be ranked that high, because of game selection and other factors. Most 3's make a living doing this, some have real jobs, but take poker very seriously. They would search the rest of the site, and others, for a better game. They would have accounts at most poker sites and would be constantly trying to improve the line-up they are facing.

4's, on the other hand, do less of this and find themselves playing against each other for different periods of time and have a negative earn that cancels out the positive earn from their good games.

The rake should always be respected, it has the highest earn in almost any game.

This is not to say that good players don't eat a negative earn game for short periods of time to start or continue a game which is likely to turn to a positive earn in a short while.
