View Full Version : Artificial Intelligent Internet Players

Are artificial intelligent Internet players used as props (fillins) to start and maintain poker games at Internet poker casinos?

Recently, a dealer at a Los Angeles poker casino who plays at Paradise Poker online told me that non-human computer poker players are commonly used as props to start and keep the games going.... He said (in so many words), "that he types in questions to suspected software programmed computer robots, and if they don't respond -- then there is a good chance that this player is non-human." My question is....

Has any other Internet Poker Players heard about non-human poker players being used at Internet poker casinos?

Or do the Internet poker casino pay human props to start poker games.

I'm just curious what honest Internet players think is going on?

Thank you

I don't know about Paradise, either about props or bots, but ARC, Party, and WSEX do use props, that play their own money, but no bots. At this time, PokerStars, TruePoker and UB use neither.

Propoker uses bots, I don't care what they say, and may use props.

Dear MS Sunshine,

What is a bot?

Thank you

Carl,

I play on paradise about 20 hours a week.

I don't keep my chat on many times, therefore if you type into me I will not respond.

I tend to believe that many other players so the same thing so that the constant stream of data of who is folding raising isn't blastin across their screens. If their are bots or if you enter a game and everyone is chatting it up, my suggestion is to try another game.

There is far too much dead money on that site to spend your time worrying about bots.

The fact that he states:

"that he types in questions to suspected software programmed computer robots, and if they don't respond -- then there is a good chance that this player is non-human."

goes to show that he isn't very knowledgeable

and doesn't have much experience playing online.

On the sites I've played on, ProPoker is the

only one to have bots, however I really don't

even consider the site as a serious place to

play. They are basically a start-up company,

that is trying to get 1000 real money-accounts

before their Grand Opening...I've suspected

all along they plan on dumping the bots after this.

I would also venture to guess that no player

that wins consistently (online) has ever accused

any major site of using a bot as a prop.

I would not worry about this. I've been in the SW field for decades and find the topic of AI very amuzing. I don't think any has anything close to a good poker player as a bot (assuming that the game is fair, of course it would be easy to make winning bots if a site wanted to cheat). The best poker playing SW I know of the the Turbo series (Turbo Texas Hold'em for example). This software would have no chance in most real games because it does not adjust to game conditions. I know that computers can now beat most Chess Grandmasters, but they still can't come close in a game as complex as Go. I think poker's complexity is closer to Go's than Chess's. Just my humble opion.

The subject of Bots at the online poker rooms has been talked to death here and nothing new seems to be said.

Hwoeer, I'm interested by RK's assertion that the Turbo Texas products play the best AI poker. Does anyone else have any theories on this? How does it compare to poki for example? If the Turbo products really are the cream of the crop then the gap between AI poker and human poker is greater than I thought. I routinely make the final table and often win Turbo tournaments against "tough competition". But I routinely get to bed early when I play evening tournaments at my local B&M casino.

People often say Ai poker will never rival human poker because computers can't adapt to different situations. But no-one ever explains why they believe this to be so.

I'm tempted to attempt writing my own pokerbot...

Sorry if I went over old ground. I only started reading this site about a week ago, so I don't know what's in the archives. BTW, there was a fascinating article in the NY Times yesterday that agreed with me that the best computer program's can beat the world champ at chess, but can barely beat casual players at go.
