I've never played in California. I obviously know what a proposition player is, at least as used in Mississsippi and a few other places.

I have no idea what it means to "host a game" in a casino. Would someone please explain.

Sometimes, a casino will pay someone, generally a known professional, to play poker at their casino. The proposition player uses his own bankroll to play, but also receives a separate paycheck from the casino for his/her time. They are used to garner interest and draw more players to the games they are playing at. These are the games they are "hosting".

Thanks for your reply.

I have seen props used and get the whole idea of keeping a game going or started by using props.

What I don't get is the expression "hosting a game." Is this simply the act of playing in the game, or does it mean something more than that? Is the prop doing anything other than playing?

a host will usually have a book of other players to call to get the game going if its not. i believe they are most common in high limit games with small player pools.

I thought it was just another/fancy term for "prop".

At the Bike --- they have a few "HOST" for the upper games --- they sit and play -- make players feel welcome --- keep the games going ---
A few of the HOST are very good players --- an older lady -- DAMN I FORGET HER NAME ALL THE TIME -- Is very good to play with --- BUT SHE IS TOUGH ------most often in the 10/20 or so games there

That was Barbara Gallamore. She left the Bike a few weeks ago but you still should be able to see her around town.
