i remember watching the wsop on tv. i want to say it was on wide world of sports, but its been so long i cant recall. anyway, my question is when they were showing it they had gabe kaplan with some other guy narrating, and it was outside and sunny, and i want to say the one i recall the most was stu ungar playing, and werent they showing every hand rather than select hands?
am i crazy?

I don't know about the Stu Unger part, but I remember Gabe Kaplan commenting on a WSOP show.
Its what first sparked my interest all those years ago.

1997 WSOP. It was outdoors on Fremont Street, and Gabe Kaplan and Phil Hellmuth were commentators. One hour edited show, not all the hands, and it shows up on ESPN now and again.

The one I remember is much older.
Very 80's in style (maybe early 90's), bad lighting...all indoors at Binions.

that was a great final table. the hairdresser guy from the wtp, stu ungar, that one guy from treasure island who couldn't wait to get all in every time he caught a piece of the flop.

and gabe kaplan was good, way better than norman chad. i felt for the players though. outside, on fremont street, in may?

Gabe Kaplan narrated quite a few WSOP's, and he even played in the earler ones (1970's, etc)

Yeah. Gabe kept mentioning how hot it was outside. Do you remember when Stu was making fun of the casino owner during the break? That was hilarious.

The best part is when Stuey comes over during a break and chats with Gabe and Phil about one of the hands. It's probably the best WSOP moment ever.

Yes, that's the part I was thinking of too. As I recall, the flop was AKx, with Stuey having an A. The casino owner rivers a flush, and Stuey calls. Gabe and Phil rib him about calling on the end, to which Stuey replies, for all I know he could be betting a King and thinking it was the best hand. Classic stuff.

Gabe plays a part in "The Biggest Game In Town", which is a great book. He and Doyle made the least politically correct bet ever - whether the Texans or the Jews would do better at the 1981 WSOP (Stu Ungar won the tourney and Gabe won the bet).

I think Gabe Kaplan plays every year.

The hairdresser guy is Mel Judah and the casino owner is John Strzemp. I believe Strzemp was the bubble boy at the main event of the WSOP in 2003.

If you like Gabe Kaplan, make sure you watch the first new WPT of the season(March 2). It's at the Mirage and I believe he finishes third.

Gabe Kaplan is low-key and his humor is very dry (I like it but I know a lot of people who don't).

As far as all the other aspects of poker announcing goes, he is easily the best in my opinion.. He has a great knowledge of the game and the players, but doesn't beat you over the head and try to show you how smart he is.

I wonder if he decided to play and not to host now, or if ESPN and the other networks just don't want him. I miss the things he brought to each telecasts, the give and take with the players like Helmuth and Unger.

When he was hosting I don't believe they showed the hole cards. I would love to hear his take on some of the hands now and his explanations on why the players make the moves they do.

i caught the end of this tourney one night when i was absolutely hammered laying in bed.

there was one hand that i remember, there was some paint ont he board and ungar was reraising this guy on the flop and turn, then pushes on the river and shows down a missed gutshot on the river.

it was the first time i got to see him play and i was pretty impressed, even helmuth who was commentating on the hand figured stuey for 2 pair....then he shows down queen high after pushin the other guy off the hand, classic.

The most memorable part of the telecast was when they interviewed Ungar at the end. Kaplan asked him if this was going to help him get his act together, and Ungar pulled out a pic of his daughter and said he was going to do it for her. Then of course he was dead a year later.

I remember that too. It was almost like Kaplan was trying to do a live intervention on TV. Anything to try and get Unger off drugs. We have all been through that with people we care for.
