So my LCD is cooked, rest of the laptop is fine. Can I pick up a crappy old monitor and output the display to that?

Its a pretty old thinkpad...P3 650.

Thanks

Yes, if the problem is the LCD. If the problem is the graphics card, then a monitor will not help. I used an external monitor on my old laptop for a year after I fried the LCD.

If possible, I would try this with a friend's monitor before I bought one. When you start up, you may not see anything because the system is still sending to the LCD. There is a Fn-cntrl key that will change to the external distplay. I think it is Fn-F8, but my memory is dim on this detail.

If you have a BIOS password enabled, you might have to type that in with no display on either screen (even better security!!).
