Man, they were pushing pokerstars.net hard. Apparently, it's a site offering only free play money games. Any reason why they are pushing this site over pokerstars.com?

im not sure if it is illegal or not, but it certainly would be shady to advertise out of counrty online gambling in the US, and im sure NBC dosnt need to be taking flack for it, so they advertise their play money site .net, im sure assuming people will be able to find their way to the .com and play for cash.

same reason the partypoker ads are for partypoker.net and not .com ... legality.

The feds are seizing ad revenues used to promote gambling sites. If they ran ads for PokersStars.com, the channel running the ads would have to fight in court to keep the money. Since PokerStars.net is play money only, it's (apparently) ok. And PokerStars will likely advertise their real money games on the play money site, so it ends up working almost the same.

In addition, many people would go to their computers and just type on PokerStars.com because all they remember is the "PokerStars."

Any source for this? I keep up with the news pretty well usually, and I haven't heard anything about it.

Discovery Networks (Travel Channel) had money seized maybe a year or more ago. It was discussed here and in the Internet forum. Google search also will find something.

I don't have a source for funds being seized, but see this article:

http://biz.yahoo.com/bizwk/050204/b3920102mz063_1.html

"U.S. prosecutors have claimed that online gambling is illegal, and the Justice Dept. has sent letters to Web sites and broadcasters that accept such ads, informing them they 'may be aiding and abetting these illegal activities.'"

ie the government sent a letter to all the broadcast companies warning them that if they allow advertisements for internet gambling, they could be held liable and face criminal charges. The letter stated is would be the same has allowing advertisements for drugs, prositution and child porngraphy (is internet gambling really that bad?). It's become a court battle now, on first amendment grounds.

I have a copy of the complaint filed in court and the letter sent around if anyone is really interested.
