Here is my question. I want to hear others opinion on whether or not I am losing money by not betting the river. When runner runner scare cards come out etc, I check it down on the river mostly. I try to put mt opponent on a hand he/she could be calling with . Also, I see most players still bet on river with scarey boards. So is it a trade off? call a check raise on river lose a bet or check down river lose a bet?

If it's runner runner scare, bet.

It's hard to answear the question without knowing what you are playing. Limit or no limit? 0.01/0.02 blinds online or 100/200 at a casino? But considering this is a fairly basic question and you are new I'm going to assume for now that you are playing low stakes limit. The answer to your question is that it is MAJOR leak in your game. I highly suggest you read the section on river play in Small Stakes Hold'em by Miller, Sklansky, and Malmuth for the specific rational.

if i am out of position against 1 aggressive opponent, i will often try to induce a bluff. if i have positon, i bet.

If you are really checking down a ton of rivers you will do better if you just bet every one instead.

You are leaving a lot of money on the table by not betting the river.

In a few games I play, I have tracked close to a 70% success rate of winning the hand if it comes to a heads up show down on the river. When I am in those games, not only do I bet every river, I am trying my best to raise everytime. I win more than I lose, and maybe by betting and raising, I am winning a few more when the other player folds the best hand, instead of getting beat on a check down.

It makes a big difference when you know your opponents. If they play straights and flushes more than they play other hands, and there are three in the hand with you, caution is not a bad idea.

If they play pretty conservative betting is best.

Depends at what level you are playing. If it's online, anything under 3/6, don't bother. They call with 'everything'

Bet the river. /images/graemlins/smile.gif
