Working for a politician in a non-political capacity (national security, and now diplomacy) doesn't seem to fit the "in politics" description. Most people in the White House and the State Department are not "in politics".

Suppose that Bush decided he wanted to put together federal gambling legislation and daryn was recommended as an expert on poker and internet gambling. If he appointed dayrn to his gambling review team, I would say that is not a political appointment, even though daryn and the team would have to deal with Congress to get a bill through.

Karl Rove is a politico in the White House, Condi Rice is a foreign affairs expert serving her country in a non-political role.
