View Full Version : 50 hours

Michael Davis

I'm approaching my 50th consecutive hour of being awake due to an unfortunate combination of events. I am going to try to last as long as I can, but I fear I have less than an hour left.

Some of you will say this is weak stuff, but this is a personal record by a longshot, and I've rarely felt worse.

Beats my record which is like 38. Thing is, I pull the 24 hour stuff like once a week it seems.

50 hours is much longer than most people are capable of. Are you halucinating yet?

Michael Davis

I'm really, really tired. I have not been hallucinating but my head hurts like crazy, behind my eyes is in serious pain and I can barely keep them open. I am almost drifting off at the computer.

I didn't have much of a choice. I had to take a surprise midterm (story not worth telling) and had the misfortune of having a second date with a remarkably beautiful woman this evening. I thought calling it off could be real bad so I didn't.

Yeah, I agree. How did it go?

The waitress wrote her phone number on the bill. First time ever. Women are so competitive.

If that was the highlight of your date, I don't know what to say. "I'm sorry it didn't go so well," and "at least you salvaged something out of it" both seem appropriate. /images/graemlins/smirk.gif

No I was very entertaining. I am socially inept so I have to psych myself up and do an acting job. I had my date laughing all evening, I'm sure the waitress noticed.

Bad idea, Michael.

I once played poker for 54 hours straight and had to drive about 75 minutes to get home afterwards. I got LOST on the way home three times, and it was a simple route I knew quite well. I started dreaming while awake to some extent, and saw images from my dream on the highway. Then, 1/2 mile from my bed, I got stopped by the police for driving erratically.

Staying up so long also hurts your body and cells in a long-term way.

You should have a small bite to eat and a cup of water and a vitamin, use the lavatory, and go straight to bed now. The longer you stay up, the more damage you are doing to your body.

So go to sleep. Once you wake up after your sleep, you will feel kind of crappy and weird. That's to be expected. Stay up part of the day, then go to bed real early and get a long night's sleep again. After this double-rest you will be mostly OK.

I once fell asleep on the way home from the casino and drove off the highway. I don't even think I had been up for 24 hours.

I love this thread. You get props for sacking up and getting out on that date. I sometimes have to do a little psyching up myself. I just normally not overly boisterous. And boisterous gets paid...err I mean laid.

This really hurst your body long-term. It does cellular damage and speeds up the aging process.

I'm never getting to half this point again in my life unless I fight in a war. I'm riding it out.

50 hours is pretty damn long. I'm surprised you are taking the time to post on 2+2. I'm pretty sure I can bang out 40 hours whenever I'm inspired to do so, and I probably stay up for 24 hours about once a week. The trick is to keep eating every 4-6 hours, and to have something interactive to do. I'm very impressed you could function socially.

Michael Davis

Dude I'm still functioning and I'm lightning-quick on the responses.

my personal record was right around 60 hours. I fell asleep standing up and fell over at that point.

I didn't wake up when I hit the ground.

I was only able to sleep for 6 hours though, as I was woken up and had work to do. That sucked hardcore.

Why are you still up?

I'm seeing how long I can go but the floating things are pretty constant now and I'm done soon. Only The Matador is keeping me awake (see small stakes).

I am impressed by your grammar and typing ability in this state.

i have read or heard that significant sleep deprivation can cause permanent damage to your brain and body.

Didn't the disc-jockey guy who stayed awake 100 hours or whatever it was in the 1950's have awful head-aches and other problems for the rest of his life?

50 hours is impressive enough. Now go to bed.

not quite related -
I saw a thing on NOVA I think a few years ago about some guy who contracted some sort of brain disease or tumor or something that effected his ability to sleep.
He was getting less and less sleep until he finally was unable to sleep at all. various doctors gave him all kinds of medication or hypnosis, etc etc and he was only able to be some sort of daze but not go into an official state of sleep.
His general physical condition deteriorated where he had to leave his job (high school band teacher), then walk with a cane, was hallucinating and really confused...his speech became all garbled, etc etc.

They had video of the guy coming back to school to conduct his last concert for his high-school band and he could barely make it to the podium..and then he dies a few weeks after that.

The whole episode about this guy was really kind of creepy.

MMMMMMMM was trying to tell me this earlier. I think the last time I slept it was pitifully short, too.

I pulled a 35-40 all nighter a couple times, by the end of it I was hallucinating that I was in Mario Land, I was seeing coins and shells and [censored]... I even had the Mario HUD in my vision, IE how many coins I had, lives, points, etc... it was awesome.

You are socially inept, yet your waitress wrote her phone number on the bill (without asking?), and your date was laughing all night. What is your secret?

there was a good men's health article where the reporter went through like 4 days of sleep deprevation.

at the end of the time period, he was submitted to some tests and was told to stay awake for 15 mins during the tests.

after telling the doc the tests were no prob, the doc showed him the results which showed that he actually hell asleep three seperate times during the 15 mins for a couple of secs each time.

scary stuff, esp. when trying to drive.
