View Full Version : Has Anyone Won $100,000

07-11-2002, 03:15 PM
I hear people post asking if they should quit their jobs and play on-line professionally hoping to make $30K-$40K per year.

Like most people, my reponse to those post is "why waste your time".

I would like to know if ther are any players who have won more than $100,000 in a year playing full-tables online. If so, have you done it more than once.

I know that there are a few head-up specialists that have done very well. But this is really and entirely different skillset than ring games.

How about some feedback to see if there are any ring game superstars in the $100,000 club.

Dude, you stole my nick.

07-11-2002, 03:49 PM
Changed mine to PokerDummy from Just Curious. Sorry about that.

07-11-2002, 04:35 PM
just a few calculations

let's say a consistent 1BB per hour would be a good earn from the paradise $20-$40 game

and no one would want to play for more than 20 hours per week or else they might as well get a real job

and they want a few good holidays so they wouldn't want to play for more than 40 weeks per year

that makes an earn of $40 x 20 x 40 = $32,000pa seem relatively easy for the better players wanting a reasonably bearable lifestyle

earning much more than that online might burn people out fairly quickly, all things considered

07-11-2002, 04:59 PM
Playing two tables at once, it is possible to make 4BB an hour at $20-$40.

The maths after that are pretty easy to calculate.

Cheers,

Keith

mike, i made $29K last year (just under your $32K figure) and there are certainly much more talented players than me playing higher limits than i play.

i think your 1BB/hr figure is too low. consider that online games are 2-3 times faster than live games. that alone would boost the rate to 2.5 BB/hr. add the fact that you can play more than one table and an earn of 3-4 BB/hr is more realistic for top player.

assuming 30 hrs a week at only 40 weeks a year.

1 BB/hr - $ 48K

2 BB/hr - $ 96K

2.5 BB/hr - $ 120K

3 BB/hr - $ 144K

07-11-2002, 05:25 PM
AND IM ASSUMING THE HIGH LIMIT YOYOS NEVER LOSE RIGHT..

CANT BELIEVE YOU PEOPLE ARE PUTTING PRO PLAYING INTO THE MINDS OF GAMBLERS --WHAT A JOKE!

07-11-2002, 05:29 PM
did he say they never lose? no. he said it is possible to earn 4 big bets an hour playing online. not only is it possible, it is what the better players make.

07-11-2002, 05:35 PM
Anybody can calculate what is theoretically possible.

I am just asking for a response from anyone has actually earned $100K in a year playing on-line ring games.

07-11-2002, 05:48 PM
I earn a little over 100K per year and I play in online ring games?

Now that I re-read it, you posed it as a question.

So now I am assuming we still haven't heard from on on-line player who has won $100,000 in a year (excluding head-up and short-game specialists).

07-11-2002, 07:01 PM
No. No.

Jimbo said he earns 100K a year and PLAYS in ring games.

Not that he earns 100K a year FROM playing in ring games.

And as for this question, as interesting as it is, I would think those that did earn that amount of money wouldn't want to point out (to those they compete with) just HOW successful they are.

Anyone that is making 100K a year from playing online poker is not someone you would want at your table. In fact I'd think it would be best to avoid them like the plague.

A cheetah that preys on antelopes isn't going to catch much if it stands out in the open for all the world to see...

07-11-2002, 07:12 PM
Assuming that people on this sight don't give out the names they play under.

If that is a wrong assumption . . . you are correct. If my assumption is correct, then why would the worry.

I posted this thread because I am of a mind that about 60% of the players on-line lose (can be verified through Poker Stat), another 20% about break-even, and the top 20% still only earn $30-$40K per year.

I DON'T THINK THERE IS ANY BEEF!

07-11-2002, 07:21 PM
Anonymous posters are prolly the only way you will get an answer but without a name known to play at hi limits it could be anybody spoofing.

Most of the better players that post here seem to use their 'real' name.

As for you're mix of WINNING/EVEN/LOSING players I'm pretty much in agreement.

I really don't think there'll be that many in the 40K+ range.

Those that do will be very regular at the big 20/40 and above tables on the main sites like Paradise imo. And obviously the very best online play has to offer.

To earn that much you are going to have to put in a lot of hours. That IS a job.

And putting in 20 hours a week would not seem enough to make that earn. That's part-time in anyones book, 3 hours a day.

07-11-2002, 08:16 PM
See my post under "making a living..." for my feelings about advantages and disadvantages of online poker.

I've made $92K since last July 10th. July, August, and September was parttime though. Since October when I started fulltime, my average monthly earnings are $9,300.

About half comes from full ring games and about half from short. $7200 from 20 hours of headsup. Add another 4K for live tourneys.

It is is hard difficult job which requires a lot of work. I am still learning each month.

07-11-2002, 08:48 PM
well,

I made 6 figures last year. I was lucky I am sure. I play at more than one table, and my average win rate was over 1.5BB per hour. I also play more than 20 hours per week, and consider this my real job. But I play when I like to play, when the games are good, and dont worry about anyone telling me to quit, or keep playing, or whatever else comes with the big "J" word.

All in all, I like poker both live and online. PlanetPoker recorded that TheCount was their winningest player, and he makes much more than $100K per year.

Not many players can even do more than break even, so playing like thecount really says something.

07-11-2002, 10:05 PM
You are a gentleman, thank you.

07-11-2002, 11:35 PM
Poker Dummy,

I think you were at least close with your beginning assumptions:

* 60% lose

* 20% break even

Up to that point....

But, after the final 20% is reached, here was my assumptions:

* Another 6 to 10% make very little money -- averaging just a few dollars an hour over the long haul. Just little supplements to other income.

* When you get to the last 10%, about the next 6% make in that semi-pro 30K + range...

* It is only the upper 4% that make good money, and that's the way it always is and will be. To make over 100K you would probably have to reach the upper 2%. And yes they are out there playing, and no they probably don't want to talk about it.

07-12-2002, 12:17 AM
I play 40 hours a week at 20-40. I make 3.5 bb per hour. thats 280 an hour times 40. thats 580,000 per year. I also play heads up for about 15 hours. I play 10-20 HU and make 9 bb per hour.

Thats about 730,000 total. I am also tutor and make 15 per hour doing that, about 4 hours a week. If my poker falls off, I can always rely on the tutoring. I run 4 miles a day, make sure you exercize. I write poetry and take dance class every week. I get a new computer every month, I dont trust the virus software stuff. Computers are cheap and I can write them off. My next point of advice is very important --- Make love every day!!! It clears the mind. Do not masterbate, its very unlucky. I have not masterbated in 2 years. I once touched myself by accident, and my aces got cracked 3 times in a row! When you play online, try sitting on S$M hold-em book, the discomfort will remind you to play only solid cards. Finally always pay your taxes. Last year I am happy to say I paid 230,000 in taxes, 20k more than I actually owed. I actually got a thank you letter from G. Bush, they do that when you over pay. Finally, never play A9 UTG, if you see someone do that write their name on a 3x5 card and just stare at the name. Never forget that name. One more thing, never buy RCA televisions, they suck!

almost spooky

about twenty years ago my company paid some guy or company called Profito a lot of money to "teach" their salesmen stuff

one of the things he mentioned which has stayed with me as being true in all walks of life was the Profito Rule - 80% do this / 20% do that

if you compared it with your comments, the only main difference is in your first lines - if the Profito Rule is correct they should read 80% lose / 20% win

of the 20% winners: 80% would be "ordinary" winners and 20% of them (4% of all) would be in the big league

good post - sensible content

Last June. It was the best piece of wisdom I got from the master and helped my game rapidly.

Thanks for your inspiration.

The thread which created your response was the same, "Who made over $100k online" and JIMBO also responded that he did.

Did you keep that piece of wisdom in your harddrive for over a year?? Or the master recited the holy wisdom like the Rabbi?? My apology, you never keep the same computer for more than a month.

Fishy I am pretty sure that Jimbo meant he earns $100,000 per year at his job which is not online poker. And also plays a little online ring, but does not make that amount there.

No wonder you guys play high stake. Here in Belgium the average salary is 16k/year

Anybody who is familiar with Zig Zigler or had an African American sales manager who admires/idolizes Zig Zigler would be familiar with the 80/20 rule....

In my book the jury is still out on Zigler..."buy my tapes". I tend to dislike about 80% of people i meet who are sales reps(tough job to act honorably in). /forums/images/icons/crazy.gif

16,000 euros average? 307 per week. I don't know about Belgium, but I've spent some time in Spain and you'd have a hard time living above subsistence on that there.

I'm not kidding.
40% people earn 1000€/month here. So that's 12k/year. Rent for a house cost 400 euromonth in Brussels. For something descent. If you go outside of the city y ou can find houses or appartments for 200 euro/month. MCDonalds menu cost 5.20€
We have a lot of taxes, but if I'm sick for 2-3 weeks I still get my normal salary.
An IT manager in Belgium earns about 2500€/month. Which is a lot of money.

I didn't think the cost of living was that low. OK.

We have a lot of taxes, but if I'm sick for 2-3 weeks I still get my normal salary.

Let's clear up a misconception most Europeans have about the US. In most jobs here, the same would be true. Not *normal* sick time (why would it be normal to be sick 2-3 weeks?), but something called short-term disability, which pays 1/2 - 2/3 salary, but tax free, so it's almost the same. With vacation time, we start lower than you, but most people who've worked somewhere for any length of time (over 5 years) have close to 4 weeks personal time off during the year. I just left a job where I had 5 weeks vacation and one week addition discretionary time after 7 years. They were in financial trouble, prrobably from giving people too much time off. /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

I know the top players at every top limit on various sites can make this amount if they put in the time. At paradise poker the player called xercism( he spells his name phonetically) makes 80 an hour(he plays two tables) so he could easily clear this amount if he desired.

I retract this statement because after seeing it again, i think it is wrong, except the part bout acting honorably.

re: sick time at work/benefits

I have found from experience Benefits/sick time/vacation at European corporation/companys is on average far superior. Granted salary usually a good bit less, but how much do you need to buy to make yourself happy???

Socioeconomical problems upset my stomach.

Re: making $750,000 playing online

Making that much money in B+M(which i imo is easier for a top rate pro) is amazing feat in itself. I can just imagine the xtra discipline/stamina it would take to do online. My question is...would it be possible/easy to duck paying the tax if you live in U.S./Can/Europe/Aus??? I am guessing it might be... ***please ignore if issue posted on before /forums/images/icons/shocked.gif

How much one needs to be happy is an individual decision. I prefer to keep government out of business. Big government is orders of magnitude more oppressive than big business.
