open internet hold'em challenge july 2002
here are the basic "rules" - add any suggestions to them as you like, below
you have to start in the 50c-$1 games at paradise with a "separate" bankroll of $40
as soon as you have made $40 you move up to the $1-$2 games
as soon as you make $80 you move up to the $2-$4 games
as soon as you make $80 you move up to the $3-$6 games
as soon as you make $160 you move up to the $5-$10 games
as soon as you make $400 you move up to the $10-$20 games
as soon as you make $400 you move up to the $15-$30 games
as soon as you make $400 you move up to the $20-$40 games
as soon as you make $400 you win the open challenge if you are the first to post here that you have completed the challenge
your bankroll will now be $2000 - buy yourself a silver cup and get it inscribed "open internet hold'em challenge winner july 2002"
any time you lose more than the amount made at the previous level you can choose whether or not to drop back to that level to rebuild your bankroll or to keep playing at that level
if you lose your entire bankroll you must start again with a new $40 at 50c-$1
obviously, the challenge is only a bit of fun and self-refereed on a mutual trust basis - but if you don't mind posting interesting hands encountered and keeping us informed of your progress it will be all the more interesting for the rest of us
i've had a couple of dry runs and i did make it to the $1-$2 tables once
the $20-$40 boys will love to watch us coming to get them, i'm sure
(although no sane person would think this harebrained scheme had anything to do with 2+2, to please mason: this harebrained scheme has nothing to do with 2+2)
I love this challenge. I was doing something similar in the past and I called it the "Paradise Ladder" where I tried to climb the stakes ladder from $0.50/$1 to the $20/$40 summit. I did get to the $15/$30 level once.
I will join the challenge and let you know if I make any respectable progress.

Why didn't you bet the river? This is upsetting me!
i figured i was up against at least one Ace, so when i ended up with only AAK against a possible AA88, AA44, AA22, or AAQQ, particularly the latter, i decided to check-call to minimise loss or to maximise gain if they bluffed - didn't expect a call if i was winning after the Q hit
the bluff bet didn't come so i lost one bb in the circumstances
I hope you learned something from your turn (and river) play on the first hand, and hopefully dont do that again.

but regrettably, bad news for me, i haven't learned anything - i would play this again the same way tomorrow
if you mean i should have check-raised the turn, i don't think i should have - unless someone had made a flush they wouldn't have bet
if you mean i shouldn't have reraised, i had only the Ad to worry about when he raised - his cap hinted very strongly that he had it, so i just called on the river - i don't think a fold would have been sensible on the river even though i did expect to see the Ad at this point because of his turn cap

I agree with that, no problem with betting out, but...
First of, I must admit that I havent played 0.50/1 for a long time, but I suspect that your opponents are quite to very passive. I think a lot of opponents would not raise you on the turn with less than the Jd. And maybe even not the Jd, but that´s possible.
Now you get raised. So either you´re up against the Jd or Ad (because I dont think the 8d will raise, do you? And a KK or TT (unlikely because of the way he played) should realize they´re most likely drawing, so they wouldnt raise either) a re-raise is profitable either if he will still call you down with Jd (but a decent player will probably not if he´s up against a not so tricky player), or you most likely get re-raised and you can safely lay down to a four bet. Maybe the first situation was the case, but the second in your opinion apparently not. Then throw in a little chance that he´s bluffing and I see far more merits in just calling down, i.e. you lose the least when you´re behind (save 2BB), win more if he´s on some kind of bluff (because he might follow up with a river bet, where he would fold to a 3-bet) (0-1BB), and lose only a 1BB (or maybe a bit more, but no much) less when you have the best hand (because if you call he´s very likely to bet the river). So yes, I think calling is better if you cant safely lay down to a 4-bet.
Then you call turn and river after the cap: I think against 99,999% of the players at this limit you can safely lay down to a four bet. But maybe things have considerably changed over the last 1-1.5 years.
BTW, if you can safely laydown to a four bet (thus not making a mistake by doing that), then I prefer 3-betting, folding to a cap, bet the river if he just calls, and fold to a river raise.

So yes, I would have saved two bets, but probably wouldnt have lost two of them, because first I think the 8d, 7d KK and TT are unlikely holdings given his play, and second the Jd would most likely have followed up with a riverbet (therefore only losing 1BB), and even the 8,7,KK, and TT are still possible to bet the river (although less likely).

i guess i got too excited having flopped the second nut flush, and with the straight flush possibility?
i guess i should learn to say although there is only one card that can beat me, because a guy raises at the right time, he must have it?
but i'm still not sure that there aren't a lot of times that some players will raise my turn bet without the nut flush - i didn't have to be betting a flush-draw on the flop - maybe i was forced to bluff a flush when the turn fell? - maybe any turn raise would make me fold a small flush? - it was the reraise that caused me concern - but even once i "knew" what he had, the pot was too big to not call the river, in my book
finally, the very fact that it is only .50-1 means you have to expect bad play and bluffs - i don't think it would surprise regular .50-1 players if either i or he or both of us had shown a low pair at the end

This seems like a generalization to me, and is not what I meant. But all boils down to the interpretation of "right time".
Everyone sees that there is a 4 flush on the board, so IMO the raise either means a bluff or a legitimate raise (i.e. with a big flush). Now, again from my experience with bad players (yours might be different) I think if they have a big flush they will only raise with either the Ad or the Jd. Note that even with the Jd they have two bigger flushes to fear (so less likely to raise) whereas you only have one card to fear.
But now look... you dont want to 3-bet against a bluff do you? (except a "bluff" KK or TT, but as I said in my previous post, IMO very unlikely holdings).

Then they are essentially on a bluff and you prefer calling to let them hang themselves. (because almost every bluff on this board has very little outs against you).

At the point of the cap there are 10.5 BB in the pot. If you call you have to call both turn and river, which he´s very likely to bet after the turn cap. So 2:11.5, or 1:5,75 on calling down. Do you really think you will win more than 1 time in 5,75 times? I dont think so. (not taking your 1 straight flush out into account, but still, you should win about 15% of the times which is very unlikely IMO).

if i am right and they are on a "bluff", (and i still have not ruled out hole pairs in this regard), then you infer i should only call - however, they are unlikely to bet the river or call when i didn't fold on their turn bluff, so there is no way they will hang themselves - i want to end it there by reraising or catch an odd call from an optimistic bluffer
if i am wrong and they have the Ad, i find out with my reraise - then i admit if i was SuperFolder perhaps i should fold to their reraise
