And only listen to these 25 for the rest of your life, what are the 25 you select for your eternity?

Me (The #'s mean nothing other than a way for me to keep count):

1. Foo Fighters - "Everlong"
2. Goo Goo Dolls - "Iris"
3. Incubus - "Vitamin"
4. Incubus - "Deep Inside"
5. Live - "Lightning Crashes"
6. Audiovent - "Underwater Silence"
7. Forty Foot Echo - "Save Me"
8. Blindside - "Pitiful"
9. Sting - "Ghost Story"
10. Coldplay - "In My Place"
11. Course of Nature - "Caught in the Sun"
12. Finch - "What is it to Burn?"
13. Tool - "Lateralus"
14. Fuel - "Hemorrhage"
15. Fuel - "Shimmer"
16. Ill Nino - "What Comes Around"
17. Radiohead - "Paranoid Android"
18. Red Hot Chili Peppers - "Under the Bridge"
19. Staind - "Epiphany"
20. Unwritten Law - "Seeing Red"
21. Smashing Pumpkins - "Disarm"
22. The Offspring - "Self Esteem"
23. Jimmy Eat World - "The World We Love"
24. Trick Turner - "Sacrifice"
25. Snow Patrol - "Run"

The whole point of me doing this is I'm hoping to see a few other lists where I can say "that person looks like they have similar tastes as me" and then see some of their listed songs that perhaps I haven't heard of. I am guessing there are a couple people on this board who would look at my list and say "that doesn't look bad" and at the same time not be familiar with a few of the songs.

Likewise, since I like a wide-variety of music I'd like to take from lists that I am totally unfamiliar with, too.

As soon as I got to about #18 it started getting really difficult to prioritize. For instance nothing from Sevendust made the cut. I like them a lot. Additionally even though on the overall whole I prefer alternative and heavy metal more than light sounding rock I'm surprised at how many soft, relaxing songs I chose. Moreover, if I had my 6 cds worth of collected classical music I think 1 or 2 of those songs would have made it, but as it is those are at my parents house and I can't recall what I'd choose from that.

Alright, let me have yours if you dare.

Quick, lazy answer = "Mule Variations" and The Pogues live album.

Real answer: (this is super hard... prolly overuse a lot of long, weird songs cause I figure you need the variety.)

1. Chopin, "Ballade in G. Minor" (forgot Op.#)
2. Coltrane, "My Favorite Things"
3. June of 44, "Of Information and Belief"
4. Radiohead, "There There"
5. Leatherface, "Discipline"
6. Leatherface, "Springtime"
7. Leatherface, "Bowl of Flies"
8. The Pogues, "The Body of an American"
9. The Pogues, "If I Should Fall From Grace With God"
10. The Pogues, "A Pair of Brown Eyes"
11. Tom Waits, "Cold Cold Ground"
12. Tom Waits, "Tom Traubert's Blues"
13. Tom Waits, "Come on Up to the House"
14. Warren Zevon, "Renegade" (live version)
15. The Band, "The Night they Drove Old Dixie Down" (Last Waltz)
16. The Band, "I Shall Be Released" (Last Waltz)
17. The Clash, "Complete Control" (From Here to Eternity)
18. The Clash, "Straight to Hell" (From Here to Eternity)
19. Morphine, "Cure for Pain"
20. Morphine, "The Night"
21. The Band feat. Neil Young, Joni Mitchell - "Helpless"
22. Black Sabbath, "War Pigs"
23. Miles Davis, "All Blues"
24. Freddie Hubbard, "Red Clay"
25. Beethoven, "Pathetique" sonata

A hip-hop list would be even harder and I'll have to do it another time.

You will probably see my taste is way different from the rest of you and spreads around the genres. I have an odd thing for gimmick songs and dont care for guitar solos or other indy all about the music "im cool because i listen to stuff nobody else does" kind of stuff. Some of the stuff is just highschool party soundtracks that were played at every house/pit party i ever went to and cant get enough of. The rest is just made up of old country songs i grew up on riding around in the back seat.

1. Bare Naked Ladies...Lovers in a dangerous time
2. Crash Test Dummies...Superman song
3. Rolling Stones....Paint it black
4. Beatles...........Elanor Rigby
5. Simon. and Garfunkle...Sound of Silence
6. Sinead O'Connor.....Nothing Compares to you

Yeah, it's really hard for me to pick one specific song from the bunch, I just wanted to get that on there. Javert songs are my favorite to sing, so I just picked one of his. Who am I is great, as is On My Own and Empty Chairs at Empty Tables.

When picking my list I didnt sit around thinking about the image of each artist/band. Rather I just picked 25 songs that I enjoy on my playlist. And whether or not you think she's a "lame poser" the girl can sing and makes some decent music.

P.S. Post your top 25 so I can pick it apart /images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I'm seeing a few Stone roses references out there (Sheriff Fatman and others).

I really was into them HUGE in college. It's likely that the only reason I'm not adding them to my list is because I listened to them SO much...over and over and over...that I finally wore-out on them.

This is the One and I am the Resurrection are solid selections though.

I'm sure I have songs that I'd be embarrased to admit that I like. My problem wasn't so much that you had an Avril song, but that you claimed that a list with an Avril song "wins", better than any other list out there. I find this invalid.

As far as my top 25 list? I agree with the above poster who said if I have to only have 25 songs, I'd rather not listen to music. Also, it would probably take me just as long as it took you to come up with a top 25.

Have you heard the song Whenever You See Fit? It was only released on 12" as a collaboration with 764-HERO. It is the most amazing MM song around. And...it's around 15 minutes long. It sounds as if you like their earlier stuff, so you may want to look this one up.

Wrong Belle and Sebastian song. The right answer is either Electronic Renaissance, Lazy Line Painter Jane, or Sleep the Clock Around.

[/ QUOTE ]

All acceptable. Others that barely missed the cut were Dirty Dream #2, I'm Waking Up To Us, and Get Me Away From Here I'm Dying.

I too couldn't decide on a New Pornographers song, but it might have been The Laws Have Changed.

Sheriff -- 3 Wedding Present songs, and none of them are Kennedy? Are you daft?

I was glad to see James represented later on. Though I'd have picked Lost a Friend or Laid.

My Stone Roses entry would have been Elephant Stone, probably just for those three drum beats in the chorus.

I'll play too. Either Rock is dead or I'm dead because I have a hard time thinking of great recent songs.

My lazy ass list of timeless music:

All songs from Van Morrison's Astral Weeks
All songs except one from Bob Dylan's Blood on the Tracks
half the songs from Gram Parsons's GP and Grievous Angel
Rolling Stones Gimme Shelter for the Rolling Stones haters out there
White Stripes Ball and Biscuit because I'd like to hear that song real loud right now.

That's about 25. Clearly, I'm a whole album/CD kind of guy.

OK, first off, I think that the specific criteria you listed - "only 25 songs for the rest of your life" results in a different list from "25 best songs" or "25 favorite songs." My lists would be very different for all three, but I think some people's lists here were more appropriate for a favorite or best list.

Having said that, here's my list. It's far from complete or correct, but I had a couple of hours of driving to do today and thought about this. These are vaguely arranged by category. For some artists, I've listed an alternate pick where I was really on the fence. Some artists could potentially have quite a few alternates. Someone good at counting might also notice that I have a couple of extra songs. Oh well. I put a period in front of the five I think I would drop, but I'm not sure.

led zeppelin - hey hey what can i do
the beatles - let it be (hey jude)
the band - the weight
eric clapton - wonderful tonight
.bob dylan - knockin' on heaven's door

marvin gaye - let's get it on
al green - tired of being alone

stevie ray vaughan - life by the drop (the sky is crying)
def leppard - photograph
guns n' roses - estranged (sweet child o' mine)
the cult - she sells sanctuary
.rancid - salvation
pixies - where is my mind (hey)

nirvana - smells like teen spirit (lithium)
pearl jam - yellow ledbetter (dissident)
counting crows - mr jones (rain king)
white stripes - you're pretty good looking
coldplay - clocks

bob schneider - big blue sea
dog's eye view - what i know now (prince's favorite son)
old 97's - king of all of the world (question)
.rhett miller - come around

.natalie imbruglia - torn
garbage - only happy when it rains
sarah mclachlan - possession

beastie boys - sabotage
lo fidelity allstars - battleflag
bran van 3000 - forest (problems)
.moby (f. gwen stefani) - south side (bodyrock)
rob d - clubbed to death

OK, I just read through the other picks. I have now added ten more songs. My 25 would come from this group of 40.

clash - train in vain
ramones - i wanna be sedated
urge overkill - heaven 90210 (sister havana)
red hot chili peppers - under the bridge
lynyrd skynrd - sweet home alabama
oasis - married with children (wonderwall)

everclear - santa monica (strawberry)
police - every breath you take

I pretty much agree. Here is the thing. I wanted some Dylan. I wanted Knockin' on Heaven's Door. I felt like when I pared down my list, I couldn't do both. So I compromised. But I suspect that might result in it not making the final 25. Also problematic is the fact that I don't think I can really go w/ GnR or Clapton because I prefer multiple other songs by them and it will really take a special circumstance for me to repeat artists when I can barely fit in genres - ideally I would add some jazz, classical, R&B/hip-hop.

I just like both of those songs better.

However, note that my picks weren't necessarily my favorite songs from each artist. I was trying to balance out the styles. So, I might prefer a hard-rockin' song from some artist, but pick a more mellow song because other artists have hard-rockin' songs I prefer more.

As Diablo has already said, this is not even close to my favorite 25 list. Diversity is crucial. For many bands, I picked a unique song rather than there best, (a good example is Operation Spirit by Live rather than Lightning Crashes).

Better than Ezra - Desperately Wanting (Live from House of Blues rather than the studio track)
Black Lab - Ten Million Years (I HIGHLY recommend downloading their only album- Your Body Above Me)
Counting Crows - Mr. Jones
Darude - Bitter Sweet
Green Day - Basket Case
Johnny Cash - Hurt
K's Choice - Not an Addict
Linkin Park - Faint
Live - Operation Spirit (A live version rather than studio)
Local H - Bound for the Floor (I expect multiple people to errata their lists and add this song after seeing it on my list)
Muse - Citizen Erased
Muse - Sunburn
Nirvana - Dumb
Nobuo Uematsu - Final Fantasy Female Medley (this was actually put together by Michael Haung based on Uematsu's work)
The Offspring - The Kid's Aren't Alright
Our Lady Peace - Life
Our Lady Peace - Superman's Dead
Pearl Jam - Yellow Ledbetter (The version w/ the most audible lyrics)
R.E.M - Orange Crush
RHCP - Under the Bridge (I'm very glad to see this song on so many lists)
Radiohead - Paranoid Android
Sarah Mclachlan - Fear
Smashing Pumpkins - Disarm
Story of the Year - Until the Day I Die
U2 - One

I might need to boot a song to make room for
In a Daydream - Freddy Jones Band

Somebody mentioned Sweet Melissa - Allman Brothers which I forgot to put on my 'just missed' list. Possibly is 26th or 25th.

Fortunate Son by CCR is on the just missed as well (I think Diablo mentioned this one).

Fatman and a couple others have been talking Stone Roses and James. There's a big difference between those two bands: basically, The Stone Roses are good... and James sucks.
I've always hated them for some reason and just don't understand why so many like them.

I even saw them in concert in London in 1989 or 1990 or so.
All about Eve, Lush and James all opening for The Cure.
Yes...it was a REALLY good show, even though it was about 100 degrees (hottest summer ever in England I believe) and James sucked.

Somehow I'm differing from Diablo's ideas on this..because my 25 'favorite' songs pretty much coincide with the 25 songs I would take if I could only have 25 of them.

although I guess I did make sure to not take more than 2 from a given artist under the stipulation....and want to spread things out genre-wise I suppose...so it might differ a little bit.

I cant do this, you are asking someone who has listened to the music he loves for the last 17 years to trim down 1,000CD's and probably another few hundred mp3 based albums to cut down to 25 songs its absolute madness.

I have just got a 40gig mp3 player as I didnt want to have to make decisions to get down to 5 gig.

Just put up a the Throwing Muses cut "Green" from their first album. Great on headphones this time of night but too arty to make my top 25.

Til Tuesday's (Aimee Mann's old band) "Don't Watch Me Bleed" could have made it.

I should have included ex Sex Pistol Sid Vicious (the dead one) doing "My Way". BTW, this version of the song closes two great movies.

They became the cool band to have a sticker from on your Volvo around 1999 on the East Coast when they reunited and toured with Hot Water Music. Some people actually bought their old albums too (like me, I was only about 12 when they broke up before, so I missed them) and they kick all kinds of ass.

A buddy of mine did an interview with Frankie Stubbs when they came to Chapel Hill. Frankie spent most of the time complaining that none of the toilets in the places he played had doors, and he couldn't take a dump in peace. He said some kid had come up to him earlier and asked for an autograph while he was pinching one, and he said, "If you don't mind, mate, I'm a bit occupied at the moment." /images/graemlins/grin.gif Crotchety old bastard.

Also, I probably should have put "Accident Prone" or "Jinx Removing" by Jawbreaker on my list.

Years ago I had a chance to see Big Country in Providence with my brother but was just too tired to go - instantly regretted it given my brother said they were terrific. Later we saw a film/video of a concert made a few weeks later and were blown away. Great band that never made it big as they should have in our opinion (especially compared to U2). Anyways, the whole first album is very good, although the sound quality isn't quite as good as it could have been. Almost any song on that album could make my list.

My brothers old band-mate made it semi-big in the music business and I think produced some of the Connells albums. Got to see The Connells in a now defunct club in Long Beach about twelve years ago. Very good band and it was hard to pick a best song.

Bodeans are very consistent so maybe my choice isn't best. Got to see them twice at HOB in Hollywood. What song is better in your opinion?

Don't Panic Coldplay
Fight Test The Flaming Lips

99 Problems Jay Z
Love will tear us apart Joy Division
All These Things That I've Done The Killers
The Masses Against The Classes Manic Street Preachers
Straight Outta Compton N.W.A.

Monkey Gone To Heaven Pixies
Losing My Religion R.E.M.

There are a ton of songs that could replace that song. I don't think "You Oughta Know" would be a good choice (I was specifically looking for a different kind of sound than that), but "Say" would. Others suggested Vanessa Carlton, Michelle Branch, etc. that probably have stuff that works. Moot point, I think, since I doubt this would end up making it into the final 25.
