Tough fold. The only hands that beat you are AA, QQ, TT, AK, AQ, AT, QT, and KJ. Considering your opponent limp-called PF, it would be hard to put him on any of those above hands except for AT QT and KJ. However, I believe your fold was correct in light of the fact that given the villain's preflop actions, he was probably a calling station and calling stations don't check-raise like that unless they have a killer hand. I'm just making assumptions though, I don't know anything about the player and you probably did and that factored into your decision as well.

Without any read at all or any other information about the villian other than his stack size, my assumption would be that he is not bluffing and that you were beat. I would have folded, also.

Some explanation of (1) how he has been playing and (2) how he became the chip leader would allow a more meaningful answer.

Entirely opponent-dependant. Some people go crazy when they accumulate big stacks because they have an "I can afford it" mentality, and are quite capable of making this raise with KQ or worse. Other people like to conserve their stacks when big stacked.

Only three plausible hands beat you - AT, KJ, QT. You have to decide how likely these legitimate-ish hands are compared to Ax, etc.
