Traveling with animals

Okay, so I just want to know if it's actually possible to travel with small dogs to tournaments. I heard Daniel N. takes his little dog everywhere! They do have carriers that look like purses...Anyone think it's a terrible idea?

I know the dilemma. Here are your problems:

1) Are you taking a flight? Some dogs are HORRIBLE on planes even in their own little doggie containers. They just don't like it. Some are fine. Some, yes, you can get little doggie purses for (this is out of the question with my dog).

2) Does your hotel allow dogs? Amusingly enough, fancier hotels are cooler about dogs than a lot of dumpy hotels. Check their website / make some calls.

3) Will the tournament director allow you to have a dog? Since I'm guessing this isn't a dog you need for medical reasons (blindness), they might have a problem as it could cause a disturbance AND random people have random allergies.

All in all ... unless you have someone there to watch your dog, I think it's not the best idea in the world. But make sure to check every aspect of the trip to make sure it'll be cool -- and double-check everything with your vet as he might have additional info.

I have a parrot and did a little research into traveling with animals.

The purse-style carriers are NOT allowed on airlines. To fly, you need an FAA-approved carrier. That basically means hard plastic.

You'll also want to check with the airline before you go. Each one has its own rules and prices. Generally, the airlines that allowed pets charged $75 and up. Check the airline's website or call their customer support BEFORE you get to the airport.

This website (http://pet-friendly-hotels.calle.com/index.html) has a list of hotels that will accept pets in different cities around the world.

I read Daniel's blog and he mentions picking his dog up at his moms after a tournament. That may have been the only one he didn't carry the dog to but I dunno.

If this is true, I've seen people as of the last month breaking the law. On my way out to California last month AND on my way back home from Mississippi this past month, I saw women getting onto airlines with those doggie purses, with tiny little dogs peaking their head out.

Maybe it isn't allowed ... but I've seen two ladies get away with it in the last month or so. I would double-check with your particular airline, regardless, as maybe that's the way it is (or isn't).

I thought Daniel left Mushu at home when he left for a tournament. Anyways, I watched an episode of that Airport show and they wouldn't let a lady bring her puppy on the plane without some sort of carrier. And I think it had to be locked down with the other pets.

Absolutely not true. I just travelled with my cat in November and I used one of the 'purse' style carriers. In fact, most airlines require a soft carrier that can fit under the seat. My mom has flown with her small dog many times, always with a soft carrier.

I think your biggest issue will be the hotel allowing it. I suspect the answer to Daniel N, and to you, might be different.
