I was watching Star Trek the next generation the other day and Worf, Data, Number 1, and the doctor lady (forget her charachter name) were playing 5 card stud.

The deal goes something like this (opening street unimportant not exact):

Data deals X5 to number one, he deals XJ to Worf, and XQ to the doctor, he then deals X9 to himself.

2nd street (or whatever it's called in Stud) he deals number 1 and Worf some rags and deals the doctor XQQ.

Data deals himself X94 and says something like "ladies up doctor Troy, your bet." So she bets here pair of Queens that are showing and Data then calls with his X94. Now I'm no 5 card stud expert, but isn't the best possible hand Data could have here is a pair of nines? His cards were both of different suits so he wasn't calling for a flush draw. Number One and Worf are yet to act so he doesn't have pot odds to chase here.

Is Data making this call as part of his metaprogramming in order to give himself a loose gambling image so he can get paid off big later?

Shouldn't Data's poker skills be infallible with him being a robot and all? Any 5 stud experts know what Data's line might be here?

The implied odds where there, as The Docter was a call station if Data makes two pair or trips.

Well, we know from another episode that Data is an ace mechanic...

The biggest mistake in this episode is assuming anyone will be playing 5 card stud in 300 years.

Data can probably predict the shuffle and he probably knows the cards coming out.

But that would be in violation of his ethical subroutines.

Was this before or after his emotion chip? He might just be on tilt.

Clearly Data has not read Theory of Poker, 27th Century edition.

What they didn't show was the hand of Klingon Hold 'em where Data had Mu'arks up vs Worf's Kurtuj-high flush but on r'inat street the board paired and made Data's full g'aurk.

Agreed. But Data has access to Star Fleet's entire database. He would have immediate access to the collected works of Skalansky and Malmuth and every poker book ever written. And he would know the books and be able to apply the information like no one else because he would have them memorized word for word. Have you ever seen how fast Data reads?

Surely a nit like Data would've studied his Sklansky before engaging in this silly human "poker" game.

The hand got even worse. After Data's seemingly horrendous call Number one raises and Worf cold calls! She has a friggin pair of Queens showing and she knows no one can possibly have her beat. Even the future is full of call stations. Even with Cybernetic organisms who have memorized the entire collected works of Sklansky playing.

(*Nerdy extra bonus question.)

Can anyone tell me what they're playing for in this game?
Money no longer exists in Star Trek society.

Hasn't the concept of money been eliminated by the time this all happens? Why are they still playing poker anyway? It must just be for fun, so that's why they are calling all over the place. Although I guess they could be playing for sexual favors.

Worf just hit his backdoor draw...take that Geordi!

^^^^^^

I know the answer. But can you figure it out?

What use does Data have for sexaul favors?
