Nanopierce is at $0.17 / share. I can put aside about 1k for a long-term investment such as this

1) Is this worthwhile?
2) What is the best way to go about getting shares?

I'd put the $1k on red or black at the nearest roulette table. That will give you a 50-50 chance at doubling up versus nil chance of getting any money back on a stock below a buck.
