Sorry, I've already got a someone moving in in a few months. I don't think the future Mrs. Justin A will be too fond of a roommate.

California is like a hot chick, looks nice and the outside and feels good the first time you come inside, but eventually it starts to wither and wrinkle from the inside-out.

If I really thought I could, I would in a heartbeat. It's kind of hard to just pick up and start over in Cali when I'm :

a)broke
b)don't have a college degree

For me to have a chance, I would have to have a place and job lined up before I went for it. That doesn't seem possible though.

yea I got an extra room in a two bedroom apartment. Palo Alto, CA. 4 casinos within 30 minutes drive.

Michael Davis

Honestly, if you're not completely broke, like you have a little bit of scratch, that's the time to move. Obviously there are enough jobs here that you can find one. Unless you're moving to Bozeman or something, just move and deal with it later.

"Where else would you rather live?"

I may not rather live anywhere else and that statement could still be true.

But I don't really care about weather. Places I would rather live include Vancouver, Prague, and Chicago. Just a few I could think of off the top of my head. Still, SoCal is definitely one of the best places to live, I won't deny that.

If he's serious then I'll vouch that Palo Alto is a very nice place to live. As far as poker goes the LA area would probably be a good place also considering you'd probably like to play at Commerce for their good selection of high stakes games. San Diego is a great place to live, but the poker action is limited to low stakes action except for the occasional 20/40 game. Unless you don't mind a two hour drive to LA.

When I took a trip out to Chicago a couple of months ago, I wasn't a big fan of the midwest. I liked Chicago when I was there, but everything else was just flat land. I'm not used to that and it seemed pretty odd to me.

You are kidding, right? It costs you more to live 1 month in San Diego than it costs me to live in TN all year.

I am jealous of the weather and casinos, however.

You're one lucky bastard if you live in Hartford. Hartford is #2 on my dream places to live list. #1 is Albany, NY.

I just moved to California. I lived in Detroit for many years. I grant you it's not as bad as Minnesota by any means, but it's close enough to approximate.

Don't you see, the fact that there are casinos makes it so you can afford to live here despite the cost /images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Also, I agree its a lot more expensive but I'm pretty sure its not 12x more expensive.

Ahhh, Minnesota...my home state...last week the temperature fell to -56 degrees Fahrenheit. That was without the windchill. With the windchill it was close to -100 degrees. Exposed skin freezes in just a couple of minutes. The mercury in thermometers froze it was so cold.

EDIT: not that there are very many mercury thermometers left.

Have you been back to detroit since moving out here? I was just back in MN for a month and we had some good old 20 degrees below 0 days and it sucked balls. It makes you remember all the things you take for granted out here, such as your car starting when you leave the casino at 4 in the morning. Or the fact that you can leave your laptop and 2001fp in your car while at the casino and not have to worry about the LCD screens freezing.

Michael Davis
01-29-2005, 06:07 PM
Yes. I went back in the middle of August. It was freezing.

I'm serious. While I was there they set a record for temperature in August. It dipped below freezing at night and for a couple of days was in the 40s. I think it maybe touched 60 at one point.

With all the LA card rooms, how hard would it be to get a dealer job? That could solve the solution for moving on to Cali and needing employment.

Not Utica? And I'm assuming you really want to live in Troy, when you say "Albany."

You are set in AA, Michigan. But you have to sleep in the snake room. Don't worry, it stays a constant 78 degrees. When we throw you the raw meat, the rats will have the advantage of numbers, but remember, you are tougher than them.

I actually wouldn't mind doing that. I have no dreams of turning pro so it's not like I'd be disrespecting myself or anything like that.

The only thing though is I'm sure I would have to attend some school to get certified. I would have to be able to afford the schooling and be able to live off my bank account at the same time. Then I'd need to make sure I was guaranteed to have a job.

I'm not offering you a roommate spot, but I'd like to put in a good word for Houston. The weather is great from fall through spring and is tolerable once you get used to it in the summer. There are home games all over the place (legal if no rake is taken), illicit card rooms all over the place (though the rake is brutal), and some total fish tank casinos within a three hour drive to Louisiana. Houston has the finest football stadium in the nation (Reliant Field), an exceptional basketball/hockey arena (Toyota Center), and a great baseball stadium (Minute Maid Park). If you compare the cost of living here to other cities, we blow them away. Also, I heard this but haven't taken the time to confirm it, we have one of the highest restaurants per capita figures in the U.S. (no wonder we're always at or near the top of the fattest city list). No, I don't work for the Chamber of Commerce. /images/graemlins/grin.gif Good luck with your search -- wherever it leads you.

Being a local born from Houston he is quite right. We could not possibly run out of freaking resturants. It is the fattest city named by Men's health. Reason? Everyone drives, nobody walks, and everyone eats out. Rent and cost of living is lower.

For card rooms there are tons of local home games going on across the city. The casinos in Lousiana are horrid. I do mean god awful. As far as Houston to live as a city. Its big, crowded, and heavy traffic. The people are nice, plenty of places to get work, and the weather is so much warmer than Pittsburgh. I still say your best bet in Cali if you want to stick to card playing.
