I was playing Party .5/.1 and was well and correctly handled on a semi-bluff by another player. I asked in a chat "twoplustwo?"

and he messaged back "brown trout"

Was this a lost in translation moment or is this a code phrase that I should know?

Instead of asking "twoplustwo", you're supposed to ask "Does the brown trout sleep in the closet?"

The correct response is "Aye, she does"
