View Full Version : skip $1/$2 and go straight to $2/$4

I've been mixing both levels into my game as my party BR has gotten over $1000. Every time I play the 1/2, my table has 7 or 8 rocks/eagles/moneybags. The 2/4 game seems to have a more normal mix of fish and taz players thrown in. Over 8,000 hands of 1/2, I'm running about -2bb/100. Over 5,000 hands of 2/4, I'm running 2.7bb/100.

Am I the only one that finds the party 2/4 game easier than the 1/2? Why is it this way?

small sample, but there's no reason for you not to do 2/4

My experience has been similar; also, the rake on $1/$2 kicks in at $5 pot, on 2/4 it's $20, so another reason to go there.

Your sample size is way too small to draw any conclusions, but one suggestion if you chose to continue playing $1/2:

Table selection

I skipped 1/2. It sucks. 2/4 is much more like .5/1 and it's 4 times as profitable. I had a bankroll of about 1800 when I made the jump though. Logged about 35-40K hands at .5/1.

I know the sample size sucks, which may be part of the reason for the losses. And table selection would definately help; I think that's the main problem. Which is why I posted my question: Are all the tables at 1/2 bad tables?

I play at a table for 50-60 hands, see that the table VP$IP average sucks (20-30%), move on to another table. Lather, rinse, repeat. Typically, I find 4 good tables after 2 or 3 moves; but not at the 1/2 level. Last night, I went through 17 tables and the BEST table I found had 38% VP$IP. Thats pathetic. Out of 108 PT sessions at 1/2, only 5 of them had a talbe average VP$IP over 40% and none over 45%. These were all played during peak time, should I try earlier in the afternoon? After midnight? I figured they would be even tougher.

rake is a killer at 1/2

I'm the complete opposite. I'm beating the 1/2 games(3bb/100) but can't get a handle on the party 2/4 games. 2/4 at other sites I'm fine but there's something about party 2/4 that doesn't work with my game.

If you want to continue to move up after 2/4 go through 1/2. .5/1 is like 2/4 and 1/2 is like 3/6. Learn to play all the games.

Steve,
If I were you I'd try and continue to build my bankroll first. A big downslide is inevitable and it's going to cost you a hell of a lot more at 2/4. Luckily it happened to me after I had crushed the 2/4 games for awhile. I took a hit for 150BB at 2/4. It was tough mentally, even though I had the bankroll. Make sure you are ready for this and stay at 1/2 until you are a winner. Like someone else mentioned 3/6 is NOT going to get any easier.

I also skipped 1/2. There are fine tables to be had there if you look for them though. But if you have the br, skipping it is fine.

I have had a similar experience at 1/2 myself. I beat .5/1 and i am beating 2/4 but over 15000 hands at 1/2 I got crushed to the tune of $450 with almost identical stats. For whatever reason there seem to be more good players at 1/2 than 2/4. The worst .5/1 players seem to be at the 6max tables but I do not know how to play shorthanded. Good luck.

OK, you are working at table selection; I misunderstood.

This really boils down to perspective - you are looking for tables over 40, I don't have that high an expectation, i.e., I can beat the table in the range of 37-38-39 so I am satisfied with that.

You post seems to be saying you consistently find tables at $2/4 over 40 - It that what you're saying?

I will second, third and fourth a few of the responses already. 1/2 is some valuable and cheap experience. I played 20k hands at .5/1 and another 20k at 1/2 even though I had more than enough bankroll to move to 2/4 after .5/1. My bb/100 dropped from 6 to 3 so its tougher but should pay off later. I would also suggest playing some 1/2 6max to work on that shorthanded game.
