View Full Version : heads up against post and fold...

05-22-2002, 02:52 PM
blinds are 400/800. a has 4000, b has 2500, i have 1500 in 10+1 holdem tournament on paradise when notice that a seems to be posting and folding automatically. begin to play on this assumption. b does not notice. break b and am now heads up against post and fold opponent. really. takes a few hands to get a into all in situations and am happy as this is true can't lose proposition as long as a stays away. then a wins 8 consecutive all-ins... finally win tournament.

seems like 8 in row is 128 to 1. is that true?

also, has this happened to anyone else? being heads up against post and fold?

I believe it is 2 to 1 every hand, just like a coin flip.

Heads 7 times in a row the 8th time it is still 50/50.

i think mr e was asking what the odds of 8 in a row are, not the odds of who wins the next hand, which is actually 1 to 1 in any case

The odds of winning 8 in a row is 1 to 1 then. The previous 7 do not matter, do they?

no, jimbo

if you play, say, 2 games the result for him can be WW, WL, LW, or LL

only 1 in 4 is WW, so the odds are 3 to 1 that he wins two in a row

by extrapolation, 8 in a row is 255 to 1, or 1 possibility in 256 possible results

Hello Mike,

Is it 255 to 1 to flip heads 8 times in a row when flipping a coin?

yes it is

as an addendum to my previous post, if you flick a coin three times it will fall in one of the following sequences:

HHH

HHT

HTH

HTT

TTT

TTH

THT

THH

so in three flips it will fall heads each time 1 in 8 times, or it has a 7 to 1 chance to fall HHH

notice that 1 flip gives 1 in 2 (1 to 1)

2 flips gives 1 in 4 (3 to 1)

3 flips gives 1 in 8 (7 to 1)

4 flips gives 1 in 16 (15 to 1)

etc

8 flips gives 1 in 256 (255 to 1)

as a by the by, looking at the list:

HHH

HHT

HTH

HTT

TTT

TTH

THT

THH

you will see that heads falls at least two times out of three flips 4 times out of 8, which is the same as 1 time in 2, which is 1 to 1, which is evens

so if you are going to play heads-up three times you are evens to win at least two out of three times for every next three you play (you can't look backwards)

not that that means a lot, as the other guy always wins - at least he does when i'm playing

Mike,

Just one last question. Once I have flipped heads seven times in a row what are the odds that the next flip will be a heads as well?

Thanks,

Jimbo

the odds on the next one toss is always evens, or 1 to 1, or 1 in 2

even if there have been 99 heads in a row

or, in roulette, (without a zero), it is always evens whether or not the next spin results in a red or a 1-18 or an odd

it's the old "cards have no memory" thing

the "package" of 8 heads in a row will happen (on average) once in 256 "packages of 8 tosses" - but you don't know which package you have been in until it is completed
