15/30 Hand at my home casino...

Hero has K-9 of clubs in SB... 3 limpers to me and I complete...
Flop comes down K-J-9 with the J of clubs... I bet out and lose BB and early limper... then I am raised by a limper with one limper behind... lose the limper... back to me and I call planning on check raising the turn... I think I have best hand and player has K-10 or K-8s... something with a top pair element and a straight draw... My logic being that if he flopped the nuts he would wait for the turn to put raise in... since he knows I play aggressive and will more then likely (ie 75% of time) bet the turn...

Turn is the 8 of clubs... I check now worried somewhat that his most likely holding of K-10 just got there if he doesnt hold K-J... he bets and I inexplicably as a reaction check raise...

Was this a good checkraise or a bad check raise... should I have led the turn or just check called... (an additional note... villian is a player who has just pissed off 5-600 and I sort of put bad beat on earlier in a hand where I had K-10s and flopped top pair and came runner-runner for a straight... and he didn't show hand) I think that he could be over playing his hand against mine...

As it turns out he 3 bets turn and I call and make flush on end for another C/R... He proceeds to walk out of room mumbling to himself.. after pissing off 800 in chips...

In addition, I thought I would provide a quick analysis of the room I play in... The room is usually very tight and only on weekends do we get more then one 15/30 going... and that is the highest limit in the room... with exception of 20/40 HO on Fridays... So as a result I play with a lot of the same players and varying my play is a very important element of my profitability...

All comments welcome... I think I played hand poorly... specifically on the turn... but maybe also on the flop... and got lucky...

hi golfer

you played it well. i think you may have had him on QT as well as KT, but anyway....oh, did the lose limper fold or was he in there too when you check-raised? that can be important.

if the loose limper was still in there when the turn bet got to you, then betting out is better than checking, even if you intend to raise. the MP limper may have been reraising to driveout and take the button with something like KT. if that was sucessful, then check-raising the turn is great. but if the loose called the flop reraise, you do better to betout since the MP limper may not have been reraising for value and may be hoping that the LP limper checks it through. that doesn't give you a value bet necessarily, but it does give you a hand strong enough to stop the free-card. the improbability of being raised combined with the urgency of getting the bets into the pot before the board horrifies any further, makes betting a must in a 3-way on the turn.

betting is usually correct for the same reasons when heads-up, however, if this opponent will call a check-raise with a lesser holding, then check-raising is the way to go. the main argument against the check-raise is that if your opponent folds, he will only be folding a hand that is weaker than yours. this is not good. you would rather that he raise or call you with a weaker hand, so usually this is not a good check-raise.

this hand is unique though, and affords you with the liberty to check-raise the turn. this opponent is steaming and telegraphs his intentions pretty clearly. you know that he will bet if you check, and if he has a weaker holding, you know that he will call....you. but only you. if he faced an over-caller, he may not be so inclined to bet and call.

the river check-raise....well, it depends on what card landed to give you the flush. if it further coordinated the straight, while he may have picked up a straight, he also may come to his senses and check it down with enough board horrification. furthermore, he is too likely to call your river bet for you to risk the check-down. i think the river is a must bet. the rest of the hand is fine.
