All this WW2 talk in another thread reminded me of this book. I took a WW2 history class as a "cake course" in college and almost crapped myself when our prof had "A World at Arms" as our textbook. I had never heard of the book and was scared of it when I saw it was 1200 pages.

Even though I'm not big on reading, I really enjoyed the book. I didn't even know at the time that it is actually a pretty famous book.

A complimentary book, to go along with that massive volujme that is mostly about grand strategy, would be John Keegan's book about the Armies in Normandy.

Better perspective than the first half-hour of Private Ryan.
