Daily Illini (http://www.dailyillini.com/news/2005/01/26/Opinions/Column.Shuffle.Up.And.Steal-841644.shtml)

This is a column, does anybody know if this really happened? I find it kind of hard to believe.

Excellent. Just like the "War on drugs" that accomplishes nothing. More money wasted.

I read it. Seems like propagandist BS. I hope that Chicago PD has more important things to do.

edit: it's not on the "police blotter" in the same issue

As a newspaper guy, just wanted to point out that papers generally don't put an item in the police blotter if there's a separate story on it elsewhere in the paper.

whats more ironic is that cops proabalby play more "home" poker than everyone else. bunch of hypocrits. i cant wait to see a cop game get busted one of these days. most likely not though, cause what cop would rat another cop out?

Once again, I find myself horrified by the audacity and idiocy of the system.

Yes this really happened. I have played a few times with the guy that wrote the original article in the Tribune. It is very sad that they go and bust a $20 buy in home game. I was also at a tournament in Chicago that got raided by Cook County vice cops. It is pretty ridiculous. There are not even any casinos in chicago that the home games are competing against, so the city isn't losing out on any tax dollars.

At the $20 game, were they playing high Chicago? /images/graemlins/smile.gif

If I had to go to court for a $20 game, I would invite the judge to the next game.

one great quote:
"It's the games that are being hosted for profit that are of concern to us because those could escalate into higher stakes and people not being able to cover their bets,"

Is this Big Hand for a Little Lady? Or does table stakes mean something else in the midwest?

This is such a freaking joke it just makes you want to cry. If I lived in Chicago i'd probably be putting in calls to every influential person I could to compliment them on their really efficient use of taxpayer dollars here. I wonder if you could sue the city if you lived a block away and suffered a break-in because instead of being out patrolling, the cops were busy taking down a $20 home game. Jesus. What is an even bigger joke, is that those same cops probably have home poker games too, they probably have a departmental office pool of super bowl score squares too, yet I doubt they write each other tickets. Don't even get me going off on a rant of how broken our law enforcement system is, and all the brother-in-lawing that goes on in the police force. I know here in Houston that if a cop pulls over an off duty cop in his own car for speeding, he certainly doesn't write a ticket, for that matter, they don't even write them to family members of cops. Yet if speeding is SOOOOOOOOOOOO dangerous that they need to be out enforcing it, then it should be enforced on everyone, 100% of the time.

If you lived in Chicago you would know that this is the most corrupt big city in the country, you would know to NEVER [censored] with Chicago cops, and you would pay your fine and go back to what you were doing without giving it a second thought.

wow, pretty scary

i read an even scarier event in my own backyard (and I am Canadian for crying out loud...we can buy cells phones from 7/11 but not handguns)

apparently someone posted their NL tournament on the internet. Halfway through the game two guys showed up with guns and robbed them of the cash and took all their wallet. the owner of the house was so freaked he ran through the house and jumped from a second floor balcony, breaking his leg.

really make me want to advertise my game widely....

cheers

Move to Texas and dont advertize! I host a game almost every week and usually have cops sit. They love to call and usually don't back down when the flop goes bad for them. They are financing my next trip to Vegas which is paid for now from last nights game! Win, win, win situation. When the on duty players take their breaks to watch the game they park their cruisers 1/2 way in the street. Sends a nice message to would be crooks and to nosey neighbors that might complain.

Last year a frat on campus was raided by feds for their "home game." They were taking a rake and were doing it every night. A friend of mine said that the few frat boys that ran it were working together to extract tons of money from idiots that did notice. Not a whole lot came of the deal, they siezed all the chips, cards and table and any money that was sitting around in the table area.

My friends and I used to play our poker game on my front porch. I guess that we were just lucky that the cops were not interested in us.

if you're angry about the UI bust, maybe it will make you feel better to know that in West Allis, WI (i believe), a bunch of cops and vice squad officers had their home game busted (however, they were playing pretty large stakes, each had about $1K in front of him).

just thought i'd share.
