I am trying to start planning my second vacation for 2005. In early August, the wife and I are heading to Myrtle Beach with her family for two weeks. I would like to plan another vacation, preferably in May or October. I will be either just me and my wife, or we may be accompanied by my buddy and his wife.

Either way, assume that I have $3,000 to spend and one week of time. I would like to go somewhere that I have never been before, so rule out the following options:

Jamaica
Aruba
Cancun
Orlando
San Diego
Las Vegas

Given the above restrictions, where would you go and why?

This would certainly not fit within the $3,000 stipulation.

Northern MN/WI/MI (UP) in October for the fall colors. $3k will go farther than you could imagine.

Go to Bermuda in May. It's so easy to get to from the East Coast - Direct flights from Philly and DC - maybe even Pittsburgh. There's no gambling, but most islands with gambling are pretty shitty anyway. It's very mellow, you rent mopeds and ride them everywhere. There are 3 or 4 great beaches and a lot of good restaurants. If you want romantic, Bermuda is right on.

My second easy one from the East Coast is Puerto Rico - They do have gambling - Also a lot of direct flights. The newish Ritz there is sweet and not too over the top price-wise. I also like the other side of the island away from San Juan - I stayed at the Hyatt Dorado Beach a few years ago and liked it a lot - Sweet golf course, but kind of isolated.

PM me if you decide on either - I can give you hotel/restaurant recs.

Costa Rica is awesome (I just went there three months ago for my honeymoon), but I'd want to spend more than $3k on a trip there. You could probably pull it off, though, if you tried (and missed out on a lot of good stuff).

What kind of stuff do you guys like to do while on vacation? Sightsee? Hike? Golf? Is quality dining a prereq? I think we need more info.

My wife does not golf or gamble, so I don't do either while we are on vacation.

Any watersports are good, and we both drink a lot.

We do not like to spend our money on expensive meals.

When we went to Jamaica, every day was basically wake up, either go on an expedition (i.e. snorkeling, guided tour, etc.) or lay at the beach all day, take a short nap, go to dinner, start drinking at whatever bar.

If you are a true Pittsburgh resident these are your only options:

Cape May, NJ
Ocean City, NJ
Wildwood, NJ
Stone Harbor, NJ
Margate, NJ

If you are really looking for something exotic Ocean City MD and Williamsburg are possibly viable alternatives.

why don't you just spend the money on a new bathtub and a camcorder? you could make money.

St. Lucia

St. Lucia is where I would like to go, I just don't think it is possible to get a full week in there for under the $3,000 limit I set.

When I went there for my honeymoon almost 5 years ago, I think we spent right around $5K, but we went all out and stayed at a super nice all-inclusive place. Now, all-inclusive is def. the way to go here, but I think going in October (we went in July) is off season a little and you may be able to find a pretty good package for $3000. I'd check it out...the island is really wonderful.

If I were going to a place like that, there is no doubt that I will be going all-inclusive. I just drink and eat too damn much not to.

We went to Jamaica on our honeymoon and stayed at a Sandals resort, dropped $5.5k for 11 days. I believe that I remember that the St. Lucia Sandals were a good bit more expensive than that.

Thanks for the suggestion. They are much appreciated.

Telford, Slough, Bracknell,Scunthorpe,Camborne.

Lesser known but very rewarding cutural hotspots in the UK.

Off the beaten track but you will enjoy a unique holiday experience if you vist these British towns.

How about Portugal...The country is so small you can do/see many different in a short amount of time. The beaches on the southern coast (Algarve region) are amazing (do a picture search in google)...the country is cheap too...

CA wine country - either Napa/Sonoma or Santa Barbara...probably leaning more towards the latter.

San Francisco is nice in october. Hawaii is nice in May. Both can easily be done for under 3K for two. PM me for Hawaii info if you like.

Hawaii. namely the island of O'ahu (more commercial & populated) or Maui/Kaua'i/Big Island (more scenic)
