I got this notification from my symantec real time protection:

Scan type: Realtime Protection Scan
Event: Virus Found!
Virus name: Trojan Horse
File: C:\WINDOWS\system32\taskmgn.exe
Location: C:\WINDOWS\system32

Action taken: Clean failed : Quarantine failed : Access denied
Date found: Wed Jan 26 15:56:36 2005

Is this a real program for windows task manager that will screw things up if I delete it, or is it just a virus file I can get rid of?

Google taskmgn.exe and it looks like a virus.

I think the legit file is mgr, not mgn.

I don't have that file on my system (running WinXP Pro). I do have taskmgr.exe though.

If you are using WIN-XP you might try downloading the microsoft anti-spyware (Beta) program. I believe it will detect and repair your particular problem, if not nothing is lost.

MS Spyware Tool fro Win-XP (http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/default.mspx)

In case you are interested Microsoft purchased Giant, Corp. They were well respected in the Spyware/Virus removal biz.
