Gates of Fire is historical fiction that makes you think a lot and is about a period of history most people know nothing about. Also, it rules.

If you're going to be in the physics section check out "Surely you're joking Mr. Feynman" by Richard Feynam.
Very entertaing, stimulating and laugh out loud anecdotes/biography of one of the all time great minds.

If you haven't read it already, the book the jumps to mind at your description of what you like is Guns Germs and Steel.

"The Things They Carried" by Tim O'brien.
It's not non-fiction but the story's recollection is loosely based on Tim O'brien's Vietnam experiences. I guarantee you it'll make you think and entertain you.

the things they carried great [censored] book! i also recommend that, but if you want funny, informative, and enlightening i suggest the know it all by a.j. jacobs. i mean if it is one of jon stewarts favorite books you know it has to be funny yet intelligent.

Anything by J. Krishnamurti, although someone on here once specifically recommended "Total Freedom".

Try "Against the Gods" or "When Genius Failed".
Both are finance type books but are well worth the read.

When Genius Failed may be the best book ever.
