try it with a splash. it doesn't make it weaker, but actally opens up the flavors. neat, you have a very concentrated, very intense flavor. with a splash, you have a less intense, but fuller flavor. with coke, you have a skirt on.

It's cheap shi[/i]t but I defy you to try it in a blind taste test against Knob and see which you prefer. (I love Knob and Wild Turkey too I just think Virginia Gentleman is a hidden gem)

I have never tried this because I usually do straight shots, how much water and do you do this only when you are sipping it?

HDPM
01-25-2005, 11:36 PM
Try it with a malt whisky. Your jameson is too boring and bland. So order a macallan or something somewhere and ask for it neat. Taste it straight. (Sip, not shooter) Then put a little water in and taste again. Maybe a spoonful of water. Or an evian capful or two. Not a whole lot. No ice. Sip the whisky. Repeat.

I think I remember hearing once that you can only get this stuff down south, but there's one called rebel yell that is quite good. Not sure if the thing about it only being down south is true, but I've never seen it in Wisconsin.

HDPM
01-26-2005, 12:06 AM
No average priced malts. My favorite average priced whiskey isn't a scotch but is Makers Mark bourbon, which calls itself "whisky" instead of the more usual "whiskey" used for American whiskies. The Scots might be offended, but oh well. It's ok to drink it on the rocks IMO, unlike a malt. Or as described. If you like Jameson try some malts next. Then try some bourbons too. Good malts tend to cost more. A lot of people suggest Glenlivet or Glenfiddich to start, but I never liked these when I first tried them. It took Macallan to convince me. If you like the Jameson you may also want to try Tyrconnel single malt Irish. It isn't too expensive.

hmmm Macallan sounds easy to remember, thanks HDPM.

Knob Creek is a decent bourbon; from the same distributor though you are better off going for Booker's, which weighs in with a 126-proof punch. It's smooth as bourbon can be, and not intollerable at around $60 a bottle.

As for scotch, I'm a big fan of Balvenie. It's a nice smooth highland that's pretty reasonably priced. Right now I keep a bottle of 15-yo single-cask on my desk for emergency access.

If you search the archives you will find a few threads about this subject...a few good reviews and comments are burried in there.

I agree - both suck, unless you want to fork over several hundred to get a vintage bottle. And even then they are just good, not anything to write home about.

Macallan is great stuff, but not exactly a cheap way to start drinking good scotch. But if you want to do it right, play an extra 3,000 hands this month and buy a bottle. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

Caol Isla 18 yr. is the best single malt ever. Bowmore Dawn and Talisker Cask Strength are both pretty good.

Whiskey is ruined when combined with anything else like, ice, water, vaginal soft drinks (coke), other toxins.

It has to be served cold as all Hell, though. How do we accomplish this? On the rocks, of course. The rocks are taken from your freezer. Do you see why? I'll let others elaborate.

Onaflag...........

PS...Jack is my choice right now, but if I plan to get annihilated, then Black Velvet would have to be the drink. I do not get a killer headache the next morning like with higher quality whiskeys.

I mostly drink blends - somehow less effort than picking and savouring a malt - and for that I like Irish - particularly Bushmills and Black Bush (slightly better version of Bushmills). Both are much better than Jamesons, although I like that well enough. I also like the ten year Bushmills single malt, although in general I'll readily admit Scottish malts are far superior. Malts I've drunk the most are Cragganmore, the Balvennie and Isle of Jura. All fairly easy drinking.

I don't drink water with whiskey, but well water is apparently the traditional way to do it. I know a guy who put a well in his backyard just so he could drink well water with his bourbon.

My favorite malt so far is Laphroaig 10yr, but I need to try many more. I especially want to try some other Islay and Island malts, because I like the whole very peaty with a bit of sea salt style.

I'm a huge bourbon drinker, because exploring good bourbon is so much cheaper. My standard midrange flips back and forth between Makers and Knob, depending on mood. Makers Mark is softer and sweeter, mainly because of the wheat in the mash bill. Knob Creek is probably the best place to start, because IMHO, it realy epitomizes the whole concept of bourbon. There are others that are more sophisticated or better in some way, but Knob really says "this is BOURBON!" to me. For a special treat from time to time, I love Bookers. I'm quite sad that Booker Noe passed on before I got to meet him.

edit: Forgot to add, that, if you simply want to get drunk, there's nothing wrong with whiskey and coke, just don't use a good whiskey. Jim Beam white label is perfect for this purpose at a mere $0.01/mL.

for most nosings and tastings they dilute scotch whisky to 20% ABV. so that is basically as much water as whisky. so you may be missing out on appreciating (as distinctly compared to ENJOYING) if you drink at full strength. i am not sure about bourbon but i would presume that similar principles apply.

Pat

patrick dicaprio
01-26-2005, 08:27 PM
it should be at about 20% ABV so that is more than a capful! overall Macallan might be the best whisky distillery.

nice to see a fellow smoky whisky drinker. Have youtried Ardbeg Ugeadail?? Very tarry and smoky especially with a dash of water. it mellows out with a little more water but still very pungent.

I like the Doublewood and think it's a great value at $30-35. If you think the Balvenie 15 is a little sweet for your taste, you probably won't be a huge fan of it, though. It's a similar style and a tad sweeter due to the finish.

See this Scotch tasting post (http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/showflat.php?Cat=&Number=1608657&page=2&view=colla psed&sb=5&o=14&fpart=1) for some more recommendations. A search on "Scotch" in OOT (and archives) will find a handful of great threads. Lots of Scotch drinkers here.

Pat,

Nice to see you posting again.

El Diablo posted about malt scotch.

I drink whiskey, however I drink Tennessee whiskey. Ala Jack Daniels. Jack Daniels has a single barrel whiskey, I enjoy only once in a while.

Top marks pat. Lagavulin 16 is the correct answer.

Anyone who says you should never take water with your whisky is blowing it outta somewhere.

It matters what kind of water. Better if it's "soft" water, ie acidic. Definitely tastes different. If you live in an area of hared water, just collect clean rain water and freeze it in an ice cube tray.
