FUNNY STORY! The other guy had Q8 as well. Split pot, unfortunately I got a penny less! So I guess you could say I lost.

He had Qd which is why... Qc is less than Qd /images/graemlins/frown.gif

It's much better when the final card is a king, seen that scenario play out in a home game once

True - suits have no bearing on the strength of a hold em hand. Must be your opponent was the first to the left of the button and he got the extra chip.

Thanks. That makes sense.

You know if he had QT, you'd still split right?

Yeah... or QJ or QQ. It's the best 5 card hand which is 4 aces and a Q kicker.

In a lot of B&M casinos, suits do matter for the extra chip. They go by the strength of bridge suits. In online casinos, this is not the case.

i would wager that a vast majority go by the "closest to the button" rule

suits seem to be the home game rule. in all home games and NYC clubs I've played in, I think the rule is by suit, and all casinos, the traditional way, by position. don't know if that's consistent throughout the country though. it really ought to go by position. worse position actually means something. worse suit doesn't

Of course home games go by "house rules" which could mean the guy with the longest schlong gets the whole pot. I like this rule as I always win. /images/graemlins/grin.gif

But just to clarify, according to "Robert's Rules of Poker" under the TIES section:
If two or more hands tie, an odd chip will be awarded as follows:

(a) In a button game, the first hand clockwise from the button gets the odd chip.

Since this was a button game I will not cite the other games.
