View Full Version : So my teacher called me sexist in front of the whole class..

during the first day of school. Here's the story:

I am a senior, and this is a class pretty far into my major. Journalism w/ an option in public relations. This class is an elective class in the major and it's with a teacher I've heard about but never had. He's gay. Like, really gay. About 60 years old. Very cocky, he likes to be in control of his class. The chicks love him though, because he knows everything about pop culture and basically all the tabloid stuff chicks are into.

So the class is about 15 people, 3 guys and 12 girls, and he writes four questions on the board to sort of "introduce" us to him. They'll lame questions like what's your pig out food, what would you never be seen buying dead, etc.

So when it comes to me, and it comes to the "what would you never be seen buying dead?", I say tampons. Because I don't think I'd ever want to buy them for a GF. Just trying to be funny.

He says "I can't believe you said that! You are sexist! There is no shame in buying tampons for your girlfriends or daughters. You have a lot to learn!"

He goes on to say how he always bought tampons for his nieces, etc. And then he asks me if I plan on having kids.

I say yeah. He says, well then you better get used to buying tampons. I am somewhat shocked by how up in arms he is about this whole situation (I really just meant it as a joke,) but now since we're this far I say "That's what the wife is for. She can buy them."

He didn't like that comment either.

"You were rude from the first day you were born."

Needless to say, I don't like this guy, and he doesn't like me. Thank god I kept myself from saying anything derogatory towards gays, because trust me, my politically incorrect insensitive self had many things I'd like to say.

School sucks.

Objectively, I'd have to say:

1. Your original tampon joke wasn't very funny, so you shouldn't have made it for that reason.
2. No reason he should have got angry, but once you saw he was a much better response would have been to explain that you were just kidding.

The wife comment is even more un-funny than the original joke -- in fact, it's pretty lame -- and because of it you have now become the bad guy, where originally I would have said he was.

If you plan to stay in the class, you should probably go up to him during office hours and apologize and explain yourself.

No, he hasn't become the bad guy.

No, he doesn't need to do this.

Also, P.S.

The first was topical, funny, and a pretty valid answer to the question.

I agree with the mouse. What you said was neither funny nor offensive. On another note I've bought tampons before, it's not such a big deal and scores you points (which are obviously redeemable only after waiting a few days).

Indeed. Like I said there wasn't anything wrong with the statements save a lack of humor. Most people probably haven't, even for the willing it doesn't occur that often that you need to since they should be prepared anyway.

I'd suggest that you pick your battles a little more carefully. I don't see why it's worth going to war with your prof when there isn't anything more to your side than, "I can say whatever I want to."

While you CAN say whatever you want to, that doesn't mean you SHOULD say everything you want to.

Also, to clarify:

I don't personally find anything offensive about your comments. But your post made it clear that they were intended to provoke, in the sense of you jokingly playing the role of class sexist.

The teacher was lame to get mad about that, but the OP just wasn't being funny to begin with. It honestly just seems like teenage humor.

Yes he has... it really doesn't matter what others think about him in the class, because the prof said it, he is now labeled as the bad guy. If it were a 200+ kid class I'd say who cares but since it's such a small class, it's not great to be pointed out as the [censored] right off the bat.

I believe he does. Whether he thought he was right or wrong, his prof thinks he was wrong. His prof already has him labeled as the "[censored]" of the class. You think that won't factor into things when the prof's grading papers?

Your joke wasn't particularly funny, but he had no right to dress you down in front of the class. I wouldn't have put up with someone who doesn't know me from Adam calling me a sexist.

I'd say withdraw from the class, but since you're a journalist specializing in public relations your going to have to put up w/ PC pricks like this for the rest of your life. Should be good training.

I think the key to it all is, if you're going to be a smartass, you have to be prepared to retreat and do damage control if you don't come off the right way.

Was the original comment made to be a joke and the prof took it the wrong way? Yes, but once he started wigging out, the OP just went on and threw gas on the fire with the wife comment.

It's like say your prof throws a fit if someone uses Arial font because he hates it. It's not something he's going to take off points for but it's going to make him pissed to have to read another paper in Arial font. Are you going to type your next paper in Arial?

You are right. That would have been the response of a cooler teacher. I might even say the "correct" response. But forget that... that's not what happened. What happened was that this guy got angry in a lame way. The question to you becomes: What is the best way to deal with this guy's anger?

I think that if you just sort of smile and say, "Whoa, sorry. I was just kidding" -- without getting angry -- that makes him look like the jackass. Plus he has no reason to dislike you anymore.

But getting mad back -- lashing out with another lame joke, or provoking comment, or whatever you want to call it -- is not a good response. That makes you look just as bad as he does. Not to mention that fact that he will now dislike you, not a good thing if you plan to stay in the class.

If he's as flaming as you say, I wouldn't worry about it. Flamers are known for loving to get worked up over little to nothing. So I personally wouldn't be too offended by it. Pissed at first? Definitely. But no long-term thing.

If half the class knows you personally, your rep isn't that big of a problem.

The only thing I would be concerned about is just watching where you step the next few classes. It could be a very long semester if you get on his bad side early.
