I'm moving into a new apartment on Thursday, so I'm ordering cable TV service. The package I got allows me to choose two of three extra channel packs: Movies, Sports, and Variety. I'm choosing movies for sure, and while the other one sounds like a no brainer, it's closer than you think. Here's a list of the channels for each. Note that variety also includes three sports channels at the end, and I get ESPN, ESPN2, and Fox sports West with basic cable.

I'd go sports, but that's cause I'm a sports nut.

If you like music and women's programming, get the variety pack. If you like to watch obscure/distant sporting events, get the sports pack.

Get the sports pack, the variety stuff you probably wouldn't watch much of....

I'm guessing you are getting time warner cable (justin is moving a little over 1 mile away from my house), and the real gold comes in the discovery channels and such that are like in the 100-120 range.

So the stuff you're talking about is better than these gems?

211 Discovery Kids
213 Discovery Wings
214 Discovery Times
215 Discovery Health
216 Discovery Home

Discovery Wings = BADASS

DirecTv just replaced it with the Military Channel, though. It's essentially the same thing anyway, at least for my purposes.

407 FOX Sports Central
408 FOX Sports Atlantic

I'm assuming these will get me lots of baseball games of teams I normally wouldn't get to see? Which teams do these regions correspond to?

oops yeah that is what I meant.....umm, this makes it a hard choice now. I thought the discovery stuff was 100-120 and you got it and were just looking to add on.

I dunno, unless you really like watching Darts and Crickett I would get the variety pack now that I think about it.

In general, the channels in the Sports pack are pretty weak. If you are really into auto/motorcycle racing or fishing/hunting/cycling/etc., then get the Sports pack for Speed and Outdoor.

Otherwise, get the Variety pack. Most of those channels are pretty stupid too, but I like having a couple like MTV2 and BBC America.

The key channel in these lineups is Fox Sports World, but that comes with both.

I gotta get some feedback on which baseball games I'll get with the Fox Sports stuff first.

More importantly, I want the college hockey games - Minnesota, Michigan, and Michigan Tech (yeah right) and UMD. Anybody get these? I was thinking about getting the sports pack if it got me this, but I wasn't sure it would. I thought the UMinn games were on MSC, but I don't think I can get that one.

Also, you have to take into account that you'll get rugby on Fox Sports World. I have no idea whatsoever what the hell's going on, but I love it.

My apologies to Justin for semi-hijacking/riding his thread.

Good if you want to see 1980's and earlier game shows and idiot reincarnations/bastardizations of them. My wife loves them, which makes my life hell whenever she remembers that we get this channel. They also have a dodgeball show which can be entertaining. I did recently see previews for something to do with poker. I don't remember what exactly the show was anymore, but I wanted to at least check it out. I think it premiers this friday at 9.

You get all sorts of great stuff on Fox Sports World. It is by far the best channel on either list. However, that is moot, as it comes in both packs.

I'm not sure how old you are, but I LOVE this channel. Old Nickelodeon game shows like Legends of the Hidden Temple, GUTS, Double Dare and the like.
