I would bet the turn $2, check behind on the river and expect to be good if he just called the turn. If you check the turn I think checking the river is good too.

The turn is ugly. It completes the flush/striaght/ and an overpair to your KK.
I'm no expert, but his turncheck may have been hoping for a CR if he hit the flush/straight/strong twopair. So I'd have checked the turn too. But if he had anything strong he would have bet the river (you showed on the turn you're willing to check and are scared of the A, so why risk you checking again if he has a monster?), given he checked I'd have bet the pot.
