Thanks for pointing out that article.

It has really made me reconsider this whole poker thing.

BTW, does anyone know what I need to do to be saved?
Do I have to be born again?

"Or is poker taking you away from your relationship with God? Only you can answer that in your heart."

About an hour ago, from a micro-stack three-handed I won a Step 5. My heart and MY God see me taking from poker and they are both cool with that.

Sometimes moms overreact, but they also know what's best for us. So listen to her concerns. If she wants you to stop playing, you need to do that.

Next time I have a tough decision to make I'll just call my mommy. No more tough river decisions...if she wants to me fold, I realize I'll need to do that.

While I don't have a problem with playing card games, I do realize poker may lead to greater problems because of the gambling involved. Some Christians would advise you to stay away from the game because of its connection to gambling. I respect that view, but I think you can enjoy poker as a game as long as you don't bet money. It doesn't sound like you have a gambling problem, but watch out—sometimes we can think we're walking on solid ground only to realize we're in a mudslide leading us down. Most addicts don't realize gambling is a problem until it is a serious addiction that is as hard to kick as any other addiction.

If you strike out the "Christianity" sentence in the last paragraph, it totally applies to anyone. Addiction sucks and sometimes you get caught up in it before you realize it.

Of course, we 2+2ers are "investing," not "gambling" right?

I can't believe people are lining up to play at a new place in florida (Players, spectators pack Florida poker room). Maybe I'm just cranky because they're mostly at greyhound tracks, which I think should be banned, but the goofy $2 max bet and insane rakes they have down there would keep me away.

Thanks for the links as always. Lots of good stuff this week.

My other worry is that in some cases the people who play a great deal of poker aren't exactly the most positive influences for your spiritual life.

[/ QUOTE ]

I'm going to need all of you to be a more positive influence in my spiritual life. Thanks.

I might as well chime in to add a different view than the brewing sneer-fest here.

I am grateful for the link because CT is a respected evangelical publication and the viewpoints of their authors are always worth reading for me.

I am a dedicated Christian who enjoys playing poker. A classic Christian viewpoint is that pastimes such as poker are fine as long as a person can manage it properly. That means certain Christians would be better off not playing poker or doing any gambling at all because it will interfere with their family life, feed an addictive personality, burden them financially, etc.

There are plenty of people playing Poker, Christian or otherwise, that should not be playing Poker.

I also appreciate Christians who are striving to live their lives accordance with God's commandments and are humble enough to ask others for advice.

If Moses hadnt dropped that other tablet im sure commandment number 12 would have been "Thy shall not gamble" /images/graemlins/grin.gif

The greektown article made me wonder why they are spreading more poker tables if it's not so profitable? Maybe they make up the difference when TJ Cloutier and Ted Forest stop by the craps table after a poker session.

Is there really much of a difference between Bingo and Poker? How many Churches used to hold weekly Bingo games in order to raise money and provide a fun activity designed to attract more church members?

I think churches should hold weekly free tournaments and play for prizes - just like all the local bars that have free weekly tourneys. . There's nothing worse than going to one of these bars and sitting next to a gut that smokes like a chimney and drinks like a fish (pun intended...)

I think it could be a great way for the churchs to make raise funds and attract members. They could require a cash donation of at least $5.00 for example. Most churches have at least one room that would hold a few tables. And "The Misses" couldn't get too upset. "Honey, I'm going to church tonight..."

What do you all think??
