Unless your sailing a ship, or kicking field goals, what purpose do they serve?

Why do old farms have those rooster weather vanes? What did farmers need to know about wind?

Makes for a great and original camera shot right before the tornadoes sweep through.

If you're in the midwest, and the wind is blowing from the east, you're in trouble.

its useful to know wind direction. for weather forcasting. guessing speed of an approaching storm, etc. i have one of those that also spin. gives me direction and speed, by looking out the window.
plus if you are shoveling manure you want the wind at your back.

cool, those sound like good reasons. although they are probably a bit outdated with all the current meteorological technolgy these days.

[/ QUOTE ] Now now now, let's not resort to name calling. If it were a good question, I might take a stab at it, but since it is not, I don't see any reason to coment futher.

I'm showing off my useless knowledge of sports and meteorology tonight. That's called an anemometer.

re: current meteorological technology. The forecast I heard on the radio yesterday for sunday, windy, low 28. I wake up this morning with frozen pipes, horses out in the field (alive luckily) 9 degrees with 40+ mph gusts.

My point? The weather man can kiss my ass!

If it's already blowing your weather vane, isn't it a little late for forecasting?
