Raise more pre-flop, I typically go 4xBb+1xBB per limper. If you decide to bet the flop, make a legitemate bet. Bet pot.

on the flop, yes I didn't read carefully but yes, bet more on the flop.

you want to charge the maximum for the draw and not pay off when it hits. you did well on the not paying off when it hits.

no dude they had a pair o' tens and 4 to a flush... I guess I just tip my cap to the person smart/crazy enough to bet at that with a pair of tens

You probably cost yourself the pot with the weak flop bet. Either check and try to get to showdown cheaply, or bet enough to represent AK as opposed to just a weak steal attempt.
