My only read on the opponent is he is a calling station

I am in the BB with [ 10D,7D ] there are 5 limpers and I have 247 and have villan covered by about 40.

FLOP [board cards 9D,8C,4D ]
It is checked to villan in MP who bets 10 and folded back to me. I make it 25 to go and villan calls

TURN [board cards 9D,8C,4D,QC ]
Hero bets $70, Villan calls $70.

RIVER [board cards 9D,8C,4D,QC,5H ]
Hero bets $150.50 and is all-in, Villan calls $101.50 and is all-in.

Given the read on the villan I feel like I should have either pushed the flop or the turn but given the way I played it and my read on the villan it was just plain stupid to try and buy the pot at the end.

In hands like this is it better to just push the flop when you have the most chance of improvement or should I have played the flop as I did to build the pot and then push the turn?

Wrong time for semi-bluffs and bluffs.

thinking about it some more, this is probably the worst possible way to play this hand. its good that you posted it though, as you are making some bad mistakes here.

I agree completely which is why I posted it. We all know what the mistakes were but what do you recommend as an alternate line and why?

I think the best way to play it is to check/call the flop and a reasonable bet on the turn and to fold the river unimproved obviously. If I had caught a card how should I have played it?

If you catch a card, just bet. You don't have to get tricky with calling stations, just value bet them to death.
